I mostly go to the Strand, one of the best bookstores (both used and new) in the country. If I'm buying gifts, I try to go to one of the remaining independent bookstores. I wouldn't buy books from Walmart if you paid me.
I buy books at the local big used book store, Title Wave, and now at Barnes and Noble, since Borders closed. I buy used from the ABEbooks web site, but the shipping to Alaska is a killer. I buy from Amazon for my Kindle. Or from Baen Books for the Kindle as well, feeding my SF addiction.
I'm addicted to buying books and other things from Amazon.com. My closet is also full of boxes of books that I bought used at library sales and am just now starting to read through. I no longer allow myself to attend the library sales, and my book buying at Amazon has been cut way down until I get caught up...which should take me through next year!
I have recently switched to Amazon. I was a BN member for several years and bought there and other local bookstores. Now I buy gently used books from Amazon and have been quite pleased with the price/selection/customer service.
I no longer purchase books for leisure reading, I check them out from the library. If I really like a book and want to add it to my collection (which is already too big), then I buy from Amazon.com.
Barnes & Noble for my nook although I've only paid for 1 book on there so far. The other books I have chosen were the free books. That and my boss & I have been playing with the lend me feature so I've borrowed more books from her than I have gotten on my own.
For actual books I've been getting more books from Goodwill than anywhere else lately. I'll also check ebay, wal-mart (the only real, closest option I have), & yard sales or flea markets. If I choose to go on into Jackson then I may check out Books-a-Million, goodwill, & a little, local used bookstore.
Our local library never has much of anthing that interests me. I use the library more for their wifi internet with my laptop & my nook.
Used. Almost exclusively. I visit the local public library and check out the shop there. Typically not much but I find something from time to time. Here in Phoenix there is a top notch used local chain called Bookmans. I have found many great books here including James Ellroy paperbacks from the 80s.
