Hey, I was wondering if any fans of detective novels like The Big Sleep or gritty stories like Build My Gallows High or The Postman Always Rings Twice or pulp fiction like Black Mask or the old style rags like that might have recommendations of some good books to read. Also, what do you really like or think is needed in a great noir read? Witty dialogue, an underworld, gangsters, femme fatales, cynical gumshoes, etc. Is there a particular plot or story trope you like (murder cover-up, heist, revenge, etc.)?
I think this qualifies as noir: The Night of the Hunter by Davis Grubb. A truly spooky and chilling story of two children chased down the Ohio River by a homicidal man pretending to be a preacher. It was later made into a movie which was pretty good, but the book is much better.
