BUT, what movie have you seen that was just pretty darn close to the book version. Of course, they can't be as detailed as the book, but after reading a book, then seeing the movie, I'm usually greatly disappointed. But the movies that I thought were good was Cujo, The House of Sand & Fog, Where the Heart is.

Some that come to mind are To Kill a Mockingbird, Zorba the Greek, In Cold Blood, Gone with the Wind.
The movies enhanced and heightened the spirit of the books.
I'm doing more reading these days than movie going. Usually if I've read the book I don't go to see the movie.

Instinct even when it is nothing like the book Ishmael, but I personally think that the movie still conveys the same basic message as the book.
Once Were Warriors
The Last Temptation of Christ
The Education of little Tree
Primal Fear
The Devil's advocate
Angel heart
Man on Fire
Drugstore Cowboy
Blade Runner
Three Days of the Condor
Fail-Safe
Planet of the Apes (the original from 1968)
Starship troopers
The Merchant of Venice

Based on a graphic novels:
The Crow
Sin City
300
V for Vendetta

TV shows based on a novel:
Although I've never read any books of Jeff Lindsay's, but if they are as good as the TV show Dexter I'll read them whenever the series gets cancelled ( I hope this will never happen).
Shogun

I agree about Dexter - definitely will read the book. I read Ian McEwan's Atonement and might see the movie during the holidays. Although it's received rave reviews, it's difficult to see how it will be better than the book.

Thanks to all of you. You gave me more books to add to my list. And, more movies to see. I'm not a big movie person myself, and usually don't watch a movie after reading the book, but sometimes I'm curious about the movie. I can't believe I left out "To Kill a Mockingbird", and "Gone with the Wind." I haven't read "Atonement", but I think its on my list.

Hannibal Lector (and/or the series) was not a very good book. The first movie was terrific.

All the King's Men is another one. Great book and the first movie -- with Broderick Crawford -- was excellent.
Exodus, good epic book and movie. Bridge over the River Kwai (I've been watching Turner Classic Movies lately)
The Harry Potter movies have been good. Faithful to the characters and stories of the books.

Sometimes, I think movies disappoint us because we are trying to compare two different media. What is critical in a book, too, may not be as critical in a film, or may even have to be portrayed in a different way -- a flashback, dream sequence, by having a character look at a photograph, etc. I know some scenes, which add to a book's enjoyment, may be omitted from a film in the interest of time.

When I was still teaching HS English, my students and I would have some great discussions critiquing movies made from books. I would always ask, "did you get the story?" It is often the theme that matters most.

More interesting, what about the books made from movies?

I agree with House of Sand and Fog, however, I didn't particularly like the book OR the movie (then why did I watch it after reading it? I don't know)

The Shining. Jack was just so good, and the ending in the book was a bit ridiculous!! Loved watching his character unravel.

Cold Mountain. Both were fabulous. But the movie was more uplifting than the book, was visually appealing, and very well acted.

I think a good story, well told, will be successful in any medium. It's the well-told part that's tough.
