Very rarely do I read a series. However, I surprised myself when I became interested in Tout Sweet by Karen Wheeler. Thankfully, I found out about the collection a year before the last book was published. (There are four books in the series. Waiting for the print edition challenged my patience. I still would've waited because the books are charming.
No. It would never have occurred to me. If I hadn't started reading Michael Connelly during the early '90s, how would I know how much I liked Harry Bosch? To say nothing of Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar series, JA Jance's JP Beaumont, or Kellerman's Alex and Milo. Or the Hardy Boys, for that matter.
But there are series that are just "episodes" that need not be read to get the whole story arc. I also read Kellerman's Alex Delaware books, but I don't consider them an actual series because you can read each book independently, and even skip some. Most detective "series" are like that.
You can't read one George R.R. Marton book as a standalone, or a Harry Potter book. those are the kinds of series I wait to read until I own then all.

Who knew? Those are the only series I've ever read.

I don't know who Marton is, but I used to live around the corner from a Barnes & Noble, and there would be a line going around said corner to purchase each Harry Potter book as it became available at midnight on its release date during the 2000s.
I must ask, though: how do you know you'll like the Marton or Potter books if you haven't read any of them?

Sorry George R. R. Martin. Typo.
I research books before I buy them. I don't just pick them up on a whim. I lot of thought went into "do I really want to dive into Harry Potter?"

Have you bought them yet? That would be dangerous for me. Unlike many readers, I don't buy books I'm not going to read, and I don't have more than a couple I haven't yet read at any given moment. I would not have been able to resist reading them if I had them on hand.

Yes, I bought them all at once and binge-read them all in a row.
I also don't buy books I'm not going to read. I also don't use libraries. I read a lot "about" any book before I buy it. I do have quite a large "to-be-read" pile, but I intend to read them all.

I think most people are reasonably adept at selecting books they'll enjoy.
If I selected a book at random from the library or most any bookstore, I most likely wouldn't enjoy it or would find it only moderately interesting. But most books I start reading, I do enjoy. Between genre, author, back-cover synopsis and book reviews, most of us get pretty good at screening out what we don't want to read and generally zeroing in on what we'll enjoy.
I typically wait. I always wait if I know it is going to be a trilogy or quartet, since that isn't too long.
However, if it is an open-ended, ongoing series, I may read them in clusters.
