Books I choose to read are usually Kindle publications that I find online (usually Amazon). I do receive a couple daily emails with suggested titles that I take the time to browse. Unless a title has been recommended by a friend or a review I have read I admit to a selection process of first checking out the cover and then reading online reader reviews. A book flunks the cover process if the cover is cartoonist, depicts buxom women and/or macho men or has the appearance of a romance novel.
I probably miss some decent reads by rejecting books by there cover art, but I have a feeling not many......
If a publisher has a serious book that is not meant to appeal to the romance novel faction or preteens I suggest that would be wise to publish with conservative cover art.
There are people who put considerable and serious thought into this. People who self-publish or who go through very small publishers with small budgets may or may not put as much thought into it.
I will say that an appealing cover will make me stop and pick up a book to see if it is interesting to me. But I've never rejected a book purely on its cover -- usually what has brought me to a book is either a recommendation from someone, a mention of the book in some kind of news article or other book, or a book review. So if that is what has sparked my interest, even an awful cover wouldn't deter me.
But, sure, if the cover is unappealing, and I have heard nothing else about the book, I'm not likely to pick it up to investigate it further.
