I feel so sorry for celebrity Anne Rice of the Vampire Chronicles fame.

I watched a recent video interview of her stating that she has given up on the vampire chronicles and all topics not having to do with Jesus "our lord and savior".

Has anybody else seen this? I bet the church she goes to is making a huge profit off of her. Remember that 10% of her income has to go to the church every Sunday.

Your thoughts...

How does a church of any sort go about "making a profit" from one of their members?

Tithing requests that the church take 10% of the church member's income. That is a profit of some sort considering Anne Rice is worth millions.

My understanding is that it's 10% of your income, not your worth, but I suppose that depends on the individual and the church.

Does it matter? They are going to find some way to get Anne Rice's money.

That's still not profit. Look up the definition.

A tithe is that which the person is encouraged to give. It isn't taken.

The current dispute is whether it is figured on the income before or after taxes.

Any money that the church makes off another person is a profit. If Anne Rice wasn't "freely giving" I'm sure they'd find some way to get her to "give" through a soft sell or other sales techniques (guilt inducing) that the church uses.

I am a former catholic and I've never heard of the mandatory 10% tithing rule. Our parish church did, at one point, send out a booklet at the end of the year listing each family's contribution. The only purpose I saw to this practice was to embarass a family into making a larger contribution.
Clip:
Most people believe that the Catholic Church requires people to tithe 10 percent of their earnings to the church. This is not the case. While 10 percent is recommended, the actual amount anybody gives is left up to them. The thought is that it is the job of those who go to the church to take care of the financial needs of that particular church. Therefore, parishioners should tithe what they can afford.
