I need more Historical Fiction. Preferably, something along the lines of Patrick O'Brien or Owen Parry's 'Abel Jones' series. American History, 18th or 19th Century stuff, Colonial Period, Frontier ( not Louis Lamore , already read his stuff), or Civil War. Not really into Gone with the Wind type romanticism, but something a little more gritty and real. Thanks for any suggestions.
p.s. Perhaps I should ask in the History Forum ? ... I dunno.
John Jakes writes wonderful historical fiction. I bought the Kent Family Chronicles for myself when I was 17 years old (in hardback) and have read them a zillion times.
I hated history in school but JJ's books bring history to life.
There is romance involved, but that is only natural when a series goes on for a hundred or so years.
I concur about john jakes. He has a number of books in addition to the kent family chronicles. There is a two book series, one of the books is called "homeland" and I cant remember the other, but the family is set in chicago, the time frame is the world's exposition time. the pullman riots, etc. it was quite good. you might also like "the devil in the white city" it weaves between the "devil" killer character and the development necessary for the world's exposition.."the white city" portion of the book. it was a great insight to chicago at that time.

The second book in the series is called American Dreams. I do have both and got both for a bargain price of ten cents each! Great finds.
March by Geraldine Brooks was very good. It's written from the POV of the father of the March girls from Little Women but is anything BUT girly. It was well researched and not a light read at all. Definitely gritty and real.
