I am sharing this book because the author suffered a great tragedy in her teen years and it was unknown to her family until recently. While she lived under the same roof as her siblings and parents, the author was being trafficked by an underground criminal group who threatened to kill her family. The most difficult part of this book is that I am the author's brother. My sister just shared this information with the family a week ago, and the book was released in March 2007.

I have spoken with the City-Data site owner and was approved to create this thread. My sister, Theresa, is now a public speaker at schools, community centers, churches and anywhere she can share her tragic story and her heroic outcome. She is currently working with the state legislature to get laws in place to protect women.

Personally, I have vague memories of some of the events since we were in high school together. I have purchased the book and will begin reading it this weekend. Please pray for me as I read this as I've heard it's quite graphic. The book can be found at Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs & more and Barnes*&*Noble.com - Books, Used & Out of Print, Textbooks, Children's Books, DVDs, Music, Toys . If you would like more information or even have her speak to a group in your area please pm me. For safety reasons I cannot give out her personal contact information.

Book Information
Author Theresa Flores shares her story of trafficking and slavery while living in an upper-middle class suburb of Detroit Michigan. At fifteen years of age, she was drugged, raped and tortured for two long years. Kept in bondage, forced to pay back an impossible debt. All the while living at home, attempting to keep family safe and attending school during the day along side of her abusers. Only to be called into 'service', late each night, while her unknowing family slept. Involuntarily involved in a large underground criminal ring, Ms. Flores endured more as a child than most adults will ever face their entire lives.

In The Sacred Bath, Ms. Flores discusses how she healed the wounds of sexual servitude and offers advice to parents and professionals on preventing this from occurring. She also educates and gives facts on human trafficking in modern day American.

About the Author
Ms. Flores has been a Licensed Social Worker for nearly twenty years. She holds a Master’s of Science in Counseling Education and is a Human Development Specialist. Ms. Flores writes a regular magazine article entitled Spiritual Parenting, facilitates a monthly kid’s group and is the mother of three children. She lectures nationally on parenting, multi-cultural issues and human trafficking.

Ms. Flores’ mission is to educate others on the horrors of trafficking and fight against this huge injustice of innocent people. She hopes that by revealing her story, it will give victims of all types of abuse hope and assist in their healing process.

Hoosier,

I'll be praying for you and your sister. I can't imagine reading a story like this about my sister. Wow. I'm sure the emotions will vary greatly as you read. God bless you, your sister, and all your family. I hope your parents will seek some professional counseling to deal with this situation.

I'll add this book to my next amazon order, thanks for posting.

Thanks for letting me know about this thread Hoosier. I will pray for you, your sister and your family. I can't even imagine how hard this must be. I am absolutely shocked that something like this could go on in a somewhat affluent and educated area of the US.
I am definately going to check out this book. Your sister must be an amazing woman!
God Bless!

Hopefully our parents will choose not to read the book. It was a tough choice for me but since I remember enough to know some of the things that went on, I really want to read it. I was harrassed by some of the guys and had my own personal bodyguard during that year of high school. He wasn't there to protect, but to intimidate both my sister and me. I feel so bad that I was so clueless as to what was happening. However I have to remind myself that I was only 14 or so at the time and there was little I could do. It still makes me very angry.

I am going to start the book tonight and then take tomorrow off since it's my wife's birthday....then back to it on Sunday. From what I've read and heard it's a difficult book to put down. I guess writing runs in the family. Who knew!

You're a sweetheart. Thank you. God is bringing so much good out of it by my sister sharing her story and trying to make a difference in young women's lives. And my part is to support her and be her "agent" of sorts. I'm working to get the word out not so much to help book sales, but to build awareness...which from my understanding is the main reason she wrote the book. And writing the book was somewhat a healing process for her too.

Hoosier, sending you good thoughts.
To be honest with you, I don't know if I could read the book at the present time, but I admire your sister immensely for her strength and resolve.

Default I am so sorry my friend....

Hoosier, my heart goes out to you and your family. I agree with you that it may be a hard book for your parents to read. They might have mixed feelings; guilt, shock, disbelief, sadness, etc. I will keep you, your sister and all of your family in prayer.

It is very sad that this could happen right under someones noses but things like this happen daily and society usually turns the other way. I am very happy that your sister is healing and helping others. I will go tomorrow to B&N to pick it up. Maybe you should wait to read the book after your wifes birthday. Your emotions maybe so stirred up that you may not be able to enjoy her special day. Just a thought. May the Lord bless and protect you through this most troubleing time and trials.
