Boston Pops Fireworks Show Moved to July 3 - Massachusetts news - Boston.com

I got a robo-call about this earlier tonight, and the Globe confirms it's not a joke. Because of predicted bad weather for Friday, the Independence Day concert and fireworks in Boston have been rescheduled for tomorrow (Thursday.) This is the first time I can remember that a "rain date" for anything wasn't set on a later day. Anybody running a lodging place has to be having a full-blown apoplexy attack by now. "Our" pyro on the 4th is one of the best shows anywhere. And the concert's none too shabby even if 95% or more of the spectators are at the Hatch Shell only for a good view of the fireworks that follow. The events draw thousands of people from other parts of the country and even the world. How many of them (even with better advance notice) are going to be able to tweak their travel plans? And how many are going to roll into town on Friday without having heard the news?

As idiotic as this decision was - all the more so because there's been heavy cloud cover since about 7:30 this evening, along with light rain - it has a precedent. A few years ago snow was in the forecast, so the city of Cambridge trotted out the usual cautionary alerts about parking on "emergency routes." Then the day in question dawned sunny, and nary a flake fell all day long. Logically enough, people happily took full advantage of the reopened street sides in light of that. No snow, no problem - right? WRONG! The powers that be rationalized that a "snow emergency" had been "declared," and tickets landed under windshield wipers throughout the city. Justifiably infuriated - as many Cantabrigians are notorious for being, citizens filed a mountain of complaints and court dockets were jammed. Everybody who got fined ended up having to pay based on that flimsy technicality.

In both cases, a weather prediction got the better of people who let sensible back-up planning fly out the window. Should there be a downpour tomorrow night and sunshine on Friday, there will be a lot of egg to be scraped off faces in Beantown.

They are having it on Thursday night because all the musical guests were contractually obligated to be there for the dress rehearsal.

Makes complete and total sense.

This will be a transportation nightmare and they may not even be able to set the fireworks off until Saturday anyway. I understand why they made the decision they did but that doesn't make it a good one.

DM84: If they postpone the fireworks until Saturday, but they will either cancel the concert or cut it short because many of the musicians have other obligations for this weekend. I'd rather have the possibility of having a full concert tonight, but maybe that's just me.

Agreed. Seems like the wise decision to me. Worst case concert tonight and fireworks Saturday. Sounds cool.

And would it not be a transportation nightmare any other day? Of course it would. It always is.

Worst case is that lightning makes it unsafe to have everyone standing outside tonight which could affect the concert.

A lot of businesses that will be closed tomorrow are open today. Commuters will be competing for space with people who are trying to go to the esplanade. The T struggles to make it through a normal rush hour so this has the potential to be pretty messy.

Storrow Drive is closing at noon which won't help either.

Hyperbole much?

Sounds like you're just angry you can't go or you like to criticize in general.

No. I just think rescheduling the event due to weather makes sense if you pick a day with good weather. Because tonight's weather is marginal I think it's a poor decision.

Fair enough, but if the other option is to cancel this seems smart.

And the forecast tonight looks pretty decent. It seems I'll have to go water my garden after work as the chance of rain seems not very high at all.
