Charlestown has no real nightlife, a couple of bars. Boston neighborhoods are real small. Fifteen minute walk to North End and North Station, 25 minutes to Fanueil Hall. Five, ten dollar cab ride to the hub of the city.

I believe that nightlife in Boston is quite slow on Sun-Wed. nights, even with all the students.

Thursdays at the Boylston Place area are popular with Estate (gam men and some female friends) and Gypsy Bar (very Euro that night). Cambridge, near and around Central Sq., is active with Middle East, TT the Bear's, Cantab Lounge.

Fridays & Saturdays are good, of course, unless it's a holiday weekend, when many leave town, esp. Memorial Day Saturday night.

Tuesdays are surprisingly busy at many of the nightclubs in the Theater District. At some, it's as busy as a Friday/Sat. night. Generally speaking, though, nightlife on any day except Thurs, Fri. and Sat. is relatively laid back. Trivia nights are common, some Karaoke and lots of sports on the TV. I think you'll find that Boston's nightlife is pub centric with a sporadic mix of other venues. Boston does have some nice nightclubs, but they're not the sort you'd find in Miami, LA, Vegas, etc. There are a number of venues for live bands (seems like the number has been shrinking, unfortunately) too.

You should be able to find most of what you're looking for. Just don't expect the type of nightlife you'd find in Miami, New York, LA or Vegas. Outside of those four, I think Boston can rival most cities in variety and quality.

Boston night life is heavily geared towards college students, with a small handful going to tourists, yuppies, and the GLBT crowd. Unless you like to hang out with 21 year olds who still think Jello shots, Bud Lite, and Capt. Morgan's are good and "dance" to crappy electronic music, then Boston is your place. But seeing your posting style, I'll assume you belong with these people.

There are some cool underground joints that are worth checking out, but good luck finding them unless you know the right people.

The Middle East is a music venue, not a club. It is not a place to "hang out at" if you are not into the particular style of music or bands playing that evening.

Default Monday Nights?

Any ideas where a lone Brit here for just a few days should spend a Monday evening in downtown Boston? Looking for some ideas of busy places with plenty of bustle and good music for spending an evening.

Can't say as I'd rec anything downtown on a Monday night, but tonight is night #2 of the annual Boston Rock n Roll Rumble @ TT The Bears in Central Sq (Red Line from Park St station to Central Sq). Not sure if there are tix left but that's where I would head.
