Looking for advice.. We are relocating from NC to MA. My son will be in the 6th grade. He has Aspergers Syndrome. He has always been mainstreamed but needs supports. We are looking for a public school system (or special Ed-friendly private school) that has a good track record in this area. Our budget is about $600,000. With that amount, need to be able to purchase a house that can comfortably accommodate a family of four. We are very open as far as location except that we need a reasonable commute to the airport, and I will need to find a job, so we need to be near centers of employment. Thank you for any input.

My understanding is that Southborough Public Schools have good resources for children with Asperger's Syndrome but you may want to give them a call to check them out yourself and find out if they have exactly what you're looking for. I'd also call the New England Center for Autism, which is a school for children with autism spectrum disorder, pervasive developmental disorder, and Asperger's Syndrome. (508) 481-1015.

If you have any questions about the town please feel free to PM me. We lived there for years & loved the community.

I know more about the south shore, but I have heard that Brookline has an excellent autism program. You may also check NECC for a private program, depending on what type of interventions you do with your child. They are pretty strict about what they will allow/not allow (for example, they won't accept a child who is on any biomedical treatments).

Hi, can't speak entirely to the schools yet, as we are just moving to Boston in June. We chose Boxford which has excellent (if smaller) schools, but I won't know about the special ed until next year(everything so far indicates it should be able to accomodate us, and talking with their staff left a good impression). I did have a lot of good input on schools for special needs in Acton, Newton, Lexington, and Sharon I think. My son also has Aspergers, and his been mainstreamed but with an IEP. I would recommend joinging the Yahoo group Commonbonds. It's members only, and is a support group for parents of children on the spectrum in the Boston area. There is a wealth of information available through the members, including recommendations on public schools, private schools, outside programs, and doctor recommendations. Basically, you ask, and they will answer. I found it to be a wonderful site to help guide my husband and I in choosing the best place to live and find a new Doctor before we even arrive. Feel free to PM me if you have other questions. And good luck!
