Hello,

I am starting to look for a new IT job as my current contract is up at the end of June. Do you think it would matter to put the address on my resume / CV as Boston, MA instead of my specific (JP) neighborhood, or wouldn't that really matter?

Nope, not at all.

I agree it shouldn't matter, but don't Jamaica Plain, Dorchester, etc. have Boston addresses anyway?

They are all classified as Boston and will mail to your address with a generic Boston. The zip code determines. My license has the actual Neighborhood.

If a potential employer has never heard of Jamaica Plain, Hyde Park, Roslindale, West Roxbury...they could assume those are actual cities or towns, perhaps too far away, maybe in central or western Massachusetts, to consider some candidates?

Boston is self-explanatory and would easily indicate if you're convenient or not to their office if they're considering two similar candidates.

I would actually think this is more important when applying to out-of-town jobs. For example, I've made it a point to show "Greater Boston area" on my LinkedIn profile instead of the actual town I live in. Local employers are likely familiar with the neighborhoods & towns.

Maybe employees are, but many of their suburban employees may not know West Roxbury is mainly white and part of Boston or that Roslindale and Hyde Park are city of Boston neighborhoods.

Had a friend years ago living in nearby and far away suburbs, who doesn't know Boston well, always argue with me that JP, Dorchester, etc., are not in Boston but their own towns! Yikes.

These are probably some of the same people who tell everyone they are from Boston when they grew up in Haverhill

It is of no consequence.

Best of luck with your hunt.
