So I was born and raised in Boston (well, outside of Boston) but went to college in Boston and everything. Just last month in April, I accepted a really great job offer and had to relocate to Charlotte, NC. My duration in Charlotte is pretty open.. pretty much as soon as I finish the project down here, I can move to a different location where we have an office (we don't have an office in Boston though).
I never thought I'd say this but I really miss Boston I'm in a dilemma because I can't just apply to another job and pack up.. this current position I have is giving me a huge career leap and I doubt another company would give me the same *chance*. Taking this position has given me much higher responsibilities that I can ask for (I'm 24) and a 35% salary leap. So I have to pay my dues, for my future

Don't know what the purpose of this thread is lol, but just wanted to express how much I miss Boston.. or the Northeast for that matter!!!! Down south here is just so different, and I'm not blending in well. Not to mention I'm a big city person.. I'm sure if I moved to NYC I wouldn't be feeling like this. It's too quiet and suburban for me Sure, I'm saving on the COL but why would that matter if I'm miserable

Give it more time! It takes at least a year IMO to get used to an area. And force yourself outside of your comfort bubble, you owe it to yourself to give Charlotte a chance.

I know.. I've been down here for a month but I REALLY don't see myself adjusting well. At least not permanently I'm going to try my best to finish what I need to do and then gtfo. Pretty much my only friend is my roommate, she is from Philly, and she feels the same way.

Please give it time, and don't stay with the mindset that you won't adjust well. If you think you won't, then you won't. Give it at least a year, you will meet people and make friends. Explore the region. Enjoy the weather, especially in the winter. You're still young and you will have plenty of time to come back to the Northeast. And when you do, you will appreciate your experience in Charlotte but be happy to be home.

I'm trying to make the best of my time here and not be so negative I'm just not sure what it is.. I really miss my friends and family back at home. I'm not sure why I'm having such a hard time making friends.. I studied abroad in Australia a year and loved it, made great friendships so thought this would be a breeze. Perhaps working life is more different than student life as I thought. I always thought.. it doesn't matter where you go as long as you have the right people with you. This proves so true! My friends and I could be stranded in the middle of the desert and still have fun haha. I am enjoying the weather now although it's actually really hot. I went back to Boston for memorial day weekend and forgot how cold it still was.

I was once relocated when I worked for a financial services company. It wasn't far. I just had to go to RI, but RI is surprisingly quite a bit different than MA. At first, I was a bit excited by my move but once I realized I didn't like RI I got pretty unhappy pretty fast. It snow balled and eventually it started affecting my attitude at work. I came to the realization that it didn't matter how good my job was or how much money I was making if I was miserable where I lived. I ended up getting a new position in the company back in Boston and while I'm no longer working in that industry that move was a step in the right direction for me.

Yeah, sometimes you just know when something is or isn't right. My first month in Charlotte and I already know that it won't be my perm home forever.. but meanwhile, as everyone says, I'm going to try to make the best of my time here. I'm making good money right now but all I want to do is buy flights to go back home

I lived in Phillie for a year attending Penn. THAT was too South for me, so I understand your pain.

Check out your alumni association- if you're in a hot field, you must have SOME connections through school.

Charlotte is a financial/banking city...not as glamorous as DC with Scandal or Seattle with Greys Anatomy. Do you do Meet-up?

Boston Red Sox Meetups near Charlotte, North Carolina - Meetup

I don't like sports, but I will hang with a group of sports fans when pining for some of that obnoxious RedSox fanmania.

The home of RSN in Charlotte. Owned by a Bostonian and lifelong Red Sox fan, this tavern has the Direct TV baseball package as well as NESN so you will not miss a Red Sox game. Anytime the Sox play the Yankees or they play during the afternoon there is a FREE hot dog buffet. Mention that you heard about Beantown Tavern on Boston's Pastime and Donnie G will buy you a beer!

I here ya OP. Charlotte is nice to visit but living there would not be for me either. But hey, it's not so bad right? You're there, making decent $, your healthy, etc. So like others and you said, try to enjoy it more. Get in the spirit y'all. Besides, could be worse...you're not in FL or Georgia or those other States.

I like flowbe's idea actually. Meet some people from Boston so you can all get together and insult the locals and their annoying, over the top, surface level hospitality. Oh, and find a lady - that always helps.

Y'all have fun now ya hear!

Kind of refreshing reading a post from someone missing instead of dissing Boston.
