I have applied for a position at Roxbury community college, but I remember reading on this forum that that is not a safe part of Boston. Does anyone know what the are around the college is like? Will it be safe to take the T there? Is that a safe neighborhood to live in or should I live somewhere else in the city and commute? I'm from san diego, ca so I'm not too familar with Boston, but I visited about four years ago. Thanks!

Hi Risa1230. I bailed out of living in Boston 23 years ago; high crime and all that goes with it. As I can ,see not much has changed since I left. By the way Roxbury is a section of Boston.
I'd live in Brookline and commute. You'd be living in a safe upscale city (borders Roxbury) and be able to absorb the city over time. All the best to you.

Roxbury is not the nicest/safest part of Boston. It is probably not the best place to live. Is it a safe place? In most cases, during daylight hours, it is safe. There are thousands of people living there. If you think about East LA, you will get that same perception looking from the outside. Remember most crime happens after dark.

If you go the link, you will see a general trend that areas south of Rt9 or Huntington is not the best place.

Like every city in the US, crime is up in the last year or two mainly due to the people we put in jail years ago are coming out in big numbers. Here's another map.

There are many places to live in the city. However, the rent is fairly high. Hence, many people commute in from towns like Quincy, Newton, .. (towns with the Colorful T-subway line/ checkout MBTA.com for all the towns) As to where you live depends on your budget and lifestyle.

Roxbury is one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Boston, but West Roxbury is rich, like bgrasser said, try brookline.

Default Depends on the area...

Hi there - it COMPLETELY depends on which part of Roxbury you are interested in. RCC is pretty safe, but next to areas that aren't as safe. This website shows the details of crimes and their dates as they are reported - http://spotcrime.com/ma/boston

This post is 9 years old. Hopefully OP has figured out where to live since then.
