I couldn’t quite make sense of what happened. It sounds like her arm became detached from her body though? Terrible way to die. Makes me angry that some cheap landlord didn’t fix it and probably charged an enormous amount for rent

Ugh, this is awful. Something similar happened a year or two ago, but I think it was in NYC. RIP to the victim.

I'm not sure either but it does sound like that's what happened. She apparently had a very large box and the box may have touched a sensor and made the elevator move. I think the elevator dropped a half floor towards the basement. It's not clear to me, but it sounds like her arm was either inside (and she was outside) or it was outside (and she was inside).

She's been identified as 38 year old Carrie O’Connor. She had only been living there for a few weeks. She worked at BU and she's taught in the past at Bentley, Northeastern, Tufts, and MIT.

Other people living in the building have said the elevator was working fine.

There's more details here (including videos):

Officials identify woman killed in Allston elevator accident as 38-year-old BU lecturer

^ That article was updated to include:

"Her cause of death has been ruled as traumatic asphyxia, and officials confirmed it was accidental."

So I guess that means her chest was crushed?

What kind of sensor accessible to the public would make the elevator move with the doors open?

I have no idea. Someone mentioned that in one of the videos.

We unfortunately can't speculate until an investigation occurs. An incident such as this will certainly require one.

Assuming what happened based on early reports or unqualified individuals is like taking the word of MSN to accurately represent medical journals instead of producing scary covid headlines.

A broken one. There are sensors specifically to make sure that doesn't happen.

Apparently the police is saying the woman was trapped in a doorway.
