This seems like an odd way to commit a robbery:

Happened at the Burberry store recently as well.

With surveillance video how do they think they wont get caught?

This is a common form of robbery. They do it all the time for ATMs here in Baltimore. The Walgreens near me has bedroom doors and plywood out front. Because it's been smashed in by cars multiple times. As do several others.

Smash and grabs are also common in Philadelphia, San Francisco and other cities.

If you do this at night or during the day your gonna do well because people are so preoccupied with the damage or the safety of the customers and the car itself that your ransack is of low priority.

They have masks on it was dark. If the car is stolen or has stolen plates- how would they get caught? Especially if they have those over-the-head ski masks and gloves. They won't leave DNA behind at all.

The only way theyre caught is if the car isnt stolen or doesnt have stolen plates. Otherwise, the merchandise will be shipped somewhere within 48 hours they'll probably accept payment using Crypto or CashApp.

Wonder if this will lead to any changes on Newbury Street? Would like to see the whole thing get pedestrianized. Maybe at least they’ll remove on-street parking, widen the sidewalk, and add some kind of barriers between the sidewalk and road?

Not to diminish the severity of the crime, but it really highlights how easy it would be for a car to leave the street and start mowing down people rather than storefronts.

I think Newbury Street should be pedestrianized. But any street could become a killing field if someone wanted to- not just Newbury.

Very sad. Makes me angry.

I realize some or most likely laugh off this and similar incidents -- and heck, it's "just a sillly luxury, overpriced boutique for silly and snobby people" which can likely withstand this at least once or twice.

But for how much longer, then these places will just abandon Newbury Street and other cities, and it'll just be banks. Even a Duane Reade pharmacy is now leaving Manhattan, and San Francisco has seen it also...and maybe other places soon.

Hadn't even heard about the other two recent Newbury Street crimes until reading this.

I walk around that area in the early evening several times per month, and do feel safe. I still enjoy walking around there...for now?

I do think having these types of boutique shops does bring a certain charm to the city. They look nice, I think they make people feel like they're in a nice place. I mean you can't go anywhere and find stores like Chanel, Burberry, Bulgari, Valentino etc. Even if you don't buy anything in those stores it's kind of nice to walk by them.

Im not sure what is to become of stores like this. I cant imagine places like Paris, London and Milan are having these issues with people crashing into them but them who knows? I also don't know how much business these boutique stores actually do. Do many people venture into Boston these days to buy a Chanel bag when they could buy one online? I suppose if i were spending that much money on something I'd want to be in the store having the full experience - but not everyone thinks like me. I think these days and especially with covid people do most of their shopping online. I mentioned a few weeks ago i wet to the SSP and it was just dismal in terms of stores and more dismal merchandise available inside - even Nordstrom.

These doesn't explain why people are smashing into the store with cars, that is just disgusting. Must be a pain in the ass for all involved in having to close the store getting the windows replaced, etc. It boggles my mind that someone would feel that desperate to do that.

This actually happened 3 days ago as well Brookline:

https://boston.cbslocal.com/2022/03/...-watch-center/

another at a ralph lauren outlet in NH a week ago:

https://whdh.com/news/police-gun-wie...-stolen-items/

I did a google search and these smash and grabs seem to be very common in LA.

Chanel doesn't sell online and it's authorized sales outlets cannot either.

People are smashing cars into stores in order to break in easily. It's like a giant hammer. The goal is to get in and out quickly.

Hasn't Boston had a pro-criminal prosecutor in recent years? We're seeing this contagion spread from other cities with pro-criminal prosecutors like San Francisco and Chicago.

I just came back from grocery store after self checkout, while I pushed the cart out the door, the wheels of the cart seem locked and I have a hard time moving it,the clerk came out and said let me try unlocking them, sometimes they are locked so shoplifters cant just pushed the cart out of the door and escaped with out paying ????
so she pointed her handheld gadget at one of the wheels of the shopping cart??
