I just spent 2 months in Boston and fell in love with the North End. What is the average rent for a 1 bdrm apt, and is it safe to walk there to Mass General Hospital at say 6pm and 8am? Is there anywhere to park a car, or do most Bostonians not bother with one? Thanks.

It is safe to walk to MGH from the North End. There is also a free Partners Shuttle Bus that you could take from North Station.

Average apartment price is tricky. You can find a studio for as low as 950, 1 bedrooms as low as 1000-1500 with utilities not included. There are some very nicely renovated 2-3 bedroom places in the N. End with roofdecks, etc. but it looks like those are pretty pricey, so if you're looking to pay 800 or less a month, you might want to look into getting a roommate.

Also keep in mind that the rent is high for the amount of space you're going to get. I had a friend who used to live in Little Italy and he was paying 1100/mo for like a 300-400 sqft 1br. Get roommmates.

You definitely do not want a car in the North End.

To get an idea on rents, check out apartment broker websites. You can save some $$$ by looking on Craigslist and not paying apartment broker fee (usually 1 month rent fee). Also take a look at SavvyRent site for an idea of what people are paying in rent in different Boston neighborhoods.

If you have a car, sell it. It is more hassle than it's worth in Boston.
