Hey guys, I had a question. I am currently looking at a few places in Hyde Park. I have lived in parts of Boston for about a year and a half, however I don't know much about Hyde Park.

What is the area just south of the reservation like? What areas should I stay away from crime wise? Etc...

Thanks!

I'm not a HP expert; lived there for a few months in 1990 on Garfield, off of Truman Highway. Never knew it then, but there are projects up at the end of Garfield, but never had a problem then.

Not far off Truman Highway, near the Fairmount St. intersection, is a pocket called Fairmount Hill, I believe. Seems nice.

Of course, Mayor Menino lives in the Readville section. Both Readville and Fairmount have commuter stops to South Station.

Ron's ice cream & bowling alley is a HP claim to fame. Photos of visiting celebs on the walls, I think.

I'd probably stay away from the River St. area, which continues into Mattapan & Dorchester. 150 or so streets off of River St. It truly takes one thru through a microcosm of Boston, which few ever see!

A couple people were killed in front of Tedeschi convenience store on HP Ave. near the police station a couple of yrs. Ago; if not killed, at least shot. A Globe delivery driver was taped up and robbed in his truck at 3 am two yrs. ago in the Stop & Shop pkg. lot.

Dan Rea of WBZ 1030 AM, a talk show host, grew up in Readville.

Some nice homes in HP, here and there, but I don't need to rush and live there.

A YMCA with pool and a newly-expanded library are downtown. I think a community stage theatre may still survive on River St.

Hyde Park is mostly nice and quiet. It is kind of remote from the rest of the city which can either be a plus or a negative, depending on your point of vies. I'm curious, though, what you mean by "south of the reservation." Do you mean the area between Stony Brook and the train tracks? If so, that area has a very suburban vibe.
