i'm interested in a university in boston and i want to know what boston is like. i've never been to boston or mass. for that matter. people say it's "fast paced" what exactly do they mean by that? i live in a small town so i've never experienced any "fast paced" environment.

Hectic drivers, busy people with a lot on their agendas, intransient people from all over, always found the Mass 'locals' sort of aloof, makes it less a city you could call home and say I want to stay here forever- its a nice city though, with a lot to see and do- I did meet some nice people sailing at Community Boating on the Charles, as well as at UMass Boston.

I am a Mass 'local' so my perspective is different, but it's certainly a city I could call home and want to stay in. It's not for everyone and some people don't like the pace, or the cold, or the cost, but there is a lot to see and do, and for many people it's a great place to go to school.

Is the school in the heart of Boston or a little outside. Things get much quieter just 20 minutes from Boston than right in the heart of the city.

Which school? The life of an undergrad is probably somewhat different if you're going to UMass-Boston as opposed to MIT.

It's in the Longwood Medical Area, which is definitely in the city but kind of on the edge of the heart of Boston. Going south and west from there you start to get into somewhat quieter residential neighborhoods. Still a ways to go before you get into true suburbia.

"Fast-paced" = DON'T meander on city sidewalks, DO rocket off as soon as the light turns green, DON'T strike up a conversation with me when you should be focusing on ringing up my groceries, DO stand on the right side of the escalator only, DON'T drive less than 60 on the highway...

As a college student Boston is fabulous. There are kids here from all over the world so socializing won't be a problem. When it comes to everday mudane errands that is where fast paced kicks in. For some reason Bostonians can't stand getting from A to B and want to do it as fast as possible and they are easily inconvenienced. For example people who live North of the city hardly ever go to the south shore or Cape Cod. Why? Because getting through Boston and traffic is an unbarable chore. They would rather drive to Deep Maine as at least the traffic is moving.

As stated before, Hey y'all in the check out line will give you a blank stare. When running errands, get er done is more like it. However we arn't socially retarded either as some would imply. We are passionate about our sports teams and we certainly enjoy a good meal and find time enjoy a good drink. You just gotta break the ice sometimes. Once that's done it's not hard to make a connection around here. Come summer time you will see a lot more smiles around these parts and people saying hello. The first 70 degree day in the spring take a walk around any neighborhood in New England and everyone will smile and say hello!

As an outsider (I've visited a few times but will only start living there shortly) I have to say I am always confused/amused when I hear so many locals talk about how aloof and unfriendly Bostonians are. I honestly have to say that my experiences with services and shops are almost invariably pleasant--much moreso than in other cities I've lived in.

It's a bit like Pittburghers who complain incessantly about how awful their weather is--I really dont think it's that bad, but I think they wear it as a badge of honor.
