Hello,
We are a young family (kids 3 and 6 mos.) and I have several job prospects in north Brevard. We are both second generation east-coast FL natives, just relocated out of the area for 2 years and may be moving back. We actually lived in Brevard out on Cape Canaveral (renting) 2008-2010.

I haven't been down in the area since 2010, and am trying to get a feel for what the area is like now. We are looking for a nice single family home in a quiet residential area, with good schools. Safety is also key! Our budget is up to 250k, and we want to buy in a good location.

Give me your honest opinions on Merritt Island neighborhoods please...when we were there I knew of several areas that were desirable for us, just not sure how everything has fared due to recent economical changes. How is north Merritt Island doing? Has crime increased in recent years at all anywhere?

I would be more willing to consider south Rockledge/Viera/Suntree area, but commute time is a top priority for me. Is it still worth considering given my criteria above vs. Merritt Island?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Have you considered Satellite Beach? With the recent extension of the Pineda Causeway out to I-95 it has helped tremendously in terms of commuting in/out. It's much more desirable there in my opinion than Merritt Island given the overall stability of all neighborhoods versus certain neighborhoods, plus the schools are top to bottom the best in Brevard County.

Thanks for the suggestion. I forgot about the Pineda. I've only driven through there on A1A to get from Cape Canaveral to places further south, never really spent time there. Are there good family neighborhoods there, sense of community, amenities, close to things like shopping and grocery stores, etc.?
I don't remember anything in particular about driving through there when I've been there. My concern would be driving A1A through Cocoa Beach in the afternoons after work...I remember that area near 520 and south was pretty obnoxious, not sure if it still is.
How far is the drive to like the Avenues at Viera? Or the Melbourne mall?
Thanks!

I just did a google maps drive time from Satellite to the Cape area / KSC and it's showing 45 minutes to an hour....that doesn't sound very fun. Is this accurate?

Julie, is your husband working in Titusville? Check out Hickory Hills area sort of close to I 95 off 50 . Have a friend who lives there. Nice mostly 2 story homes, well kept up. Lots of Nasa and people who work at the Cape. I could see moving there myself.

Julie-we just bought in North Merritt Island I have a beautiful custom built home on 1.35 acres. Yes, it does take about 6-7 minutes to get to all the stores, but for us coming from the Northeast its not a big commute. I like the fact that we have a beautiful neighborhood and land for my son to play on yet I am close enough to everythingl. As far as schools go, that was my main concern. It took me over 2 years to find what we wanted. I did check out Viera, very nice but too cookie cutter and the high school even though its new was way to big for us. Some people may like that but I have to think of my child's needs. I called the area schools and spoke to the principals, asked a bunch of questions and reviewed. I would suggest that you might want to do that and might make you feel more comfortable with your decision. Whatever you decide..good luck!!!

That is accurate and wouldn't have suggested it had I known you'd be working at the Cape. It's too bad because I think you would have really liked living there. The north end of Merritt Island is probably your best bet given price range, schools and commute time. There are some nice listings in your price range north of 528, south of Porcher Road and west of Courtenay Parkway. Good luck!
