Yes I am considering Akron and places North of there. It all just depends on where I will be able to find the right house on at least half an acre when the time is right to start a serious search.
Many of the older towns along the Erie Canal have older homes on lots of land and so do many east of Buffalo and south toward Cattaraugus County, places like Holland come right to expressways. They are cheaper than close to the city. However, it has a cost: gas and time. When you figure out where you are going to work, decide how long it will take you to get there. Give yourself lots of time for winter. (This past winter, it would never have made a difference, but most years, snow makes it longer)
Welcome to the area!!! We have some of the most beautiful homes I've seen anywhere. I continue to marvel at the beauty of the architecture even though it's already been a year and a half or so since I've been back. Although Holland and some of the other more rural areas have beautiful homes, you really don't have to go that far to find them. I'm sure you've seen them around Hamburg and Orchard Park and many of the other areas you've looked at and you can get decent sized lots without going way out there, although I'm sure there are a lot of benefits to being in the country too. And if you do opt for a more distant location, there are hospitals and medical offices all over so you might not have to make a drive into the city every day if you didn't want to. Springville for example has a small hospital and Lakeshore is in another direction... so you have lots of options.) I hope you love it here and find the perfect place... keep us updated!
It has been awhile since I updated you all on our status....
We have visited the area twice and stayed for about a week each time. The second trip was last July and we focused more on the areas around Lockport east to Medina and north to Olcott. We love the quiet towns and farms that we passed by. Ideally we are going to look for a Victorian house on an acre in a quiet area around Lockport. I'm sure those houses sell quickly so we will not be too picky on location when the time comes.
Most of our Oklahoma family and friends give us grief every time we mention moving to NY--all they think of is NYC and they don't understand that it is so different in WNY. We already have a realtor in Lockport that we are working with, and will be listing our house for sale this month. If it does not sell by August we will take it off the market until next spring because our son will be in school and we don't want to be moving in the middle of winter.
Every time we have been to the area, we are always happy with what we see and impressed by the friendliness of the people we talk to. People seem to care about their historical buildings and towns and we need more of that these days.
