I have an enhanced driver license, a little less hassle than a passport and a little cheaper.

Pics can be taken at any drug store.

Passport office is downtown near the electric building. You can make an appointment, go in, get interviewed, and your passport will be ready same day...around 4pm.

Or you can get an enhanced driver license.

Those are your 2 choices for border crossing.

Enhanced license = driving only (or flying IN USA, not to Canada or elsewhere)

Passport = any border crossing, not just North America

----------------------
Passport is actually less of a pain to get! Got it thru the Post Office: they took pics and sent it all off and it was back in less than 2 weeks. I used my Passport to get my enhanced -- and still had to bring proof of my address in NY and a NY State Tax return for my hubby in lieu of him not being able to find his SS card.. I had mine and each a cc or utility bill w/our name sent to our address within the past 30 days to DMV.

Passport = citizenship

Enhanced = citizenship plus residence in NY state.

why get an enhanced DL if you already have a passport?

I need my passport if I intend to go to Europe anyway...if the dollars keeps getting better I just may! The last time I was in Paris, I paid 12 bucks for a brioche and espresso.

If you are here in Buffalo, don't go to the post office.

Go to the Passport office. That is a location where they make the passports for the entire country. We have one here in Buffalo, and you are able to walk in (with an appiontment) at 9am and come back at 4pm to pick up your US Passport.

Post office = at least 2 weeks
Passport office = less than 24 hours

Your choice.

You carry your passport daily? We don't. It is in the safe in the house. However, we occasionally drive over to places in Canada on a whim and if I was ever not home and needed to fly somewhere in the US? Got the enhanced.

Had the passport for years; re-upped before they had a passport office here and the PO was easy.

It has only been here about a year. Most people had passports prior to that and going to a PO was a lot easier than to NYC or DC ( closest offices.)
