A lot of new development is currently happening in Buffalo and the surrounding area. By 2017, many of the following projects will be completed, transforming and revitalizing Buffalo into a more modern and robust city.
These include:
- The Webster block development
- The new Buffalo Creek Casino
- The new UB Medical campus downtown
- New Hilton Garden Inn at Lafayette Square
- Dinosaur BBQ (scheduled to open October 2013)
- Planned Peace bridge plaza improvements Cuomo's failed huffing and puffing on Peace Bridge - Investigative Post

Positive recent developments have included:
- A $5 million dollar renovation to Niagara Falls state park
- A $4.5 million dollar splash pad at MLK park

Great post RC. There is still a great deal of work to be done, and some danger ahead (potential 95% vacancy next yr at HSBC tower being a biggie) but the arrow is definitely pointing up for a town that has been down for so long.
Whoopty-doo. Buffalo has been "rebuilding"/"redeveloping" downtown Buffalo for the last fifty years. Every decade or so, they start a new building spurt.
Remember when the Main Place Mall was supposed to bring prosperity to Buffalo?
Remember when the convention center was supposed to bring prosperity to Buffalo?
Remember when the ECC downtown campus, the subway, and a new baseball stadium were supposed to bring prosperity to Buffalo?
Remember when the Theatre District was supposed to bring prosperity to Buffalo?
Remember when building expensive housing on the Inner Harbor and around downtown was supposed to bring prosperity to Buffalo?
Despite all the promises, the fact is that about 1/4 of Buffalo households live below the poverty level, and just this morning the Buffalo News ran a story that half the children in Buffalo live in poverty.
I'm sorry to rain on your parade, but I'll believe that all these building projects will actually benefit the city in any way when they actually do. It ain't happened yet.
Furthermore, that you think an ignorant, sexist, homophobic, racist bigot like Paladino, who has sucked at the public teat for decades, is a "non-status quo" candidate simply shows exactly how ignorant you are. Paladino made his fortune off his "good ol' boy" relationships with Griffin and Masiello. Now that Brown has cut him off from insider info and favoritism, he's trying to establish a political base for himself.
Paladino certainly is an odd choice in this, and I am not a fan, but he will shake up the Board. Maybe not get any of his ways, but it needs a shake-up -- and he will get attention on issues and cause other members to actually take positions, not just rubber stamp items.
I believe it was Eugene Reville who replaced the mayoral appointed Board with an elected one ( 1970s). I am not sure it did the schools any good. That is another thing that was supposed to " improve Buffalo ". On any day of a Board Election, the polling places are virtually empty. They are in the schools. Schools are closed for Election Day in Nov., but the schools don't close for School Board elections. That in itself says a lot.
In general, I like to see the projects and I like that downtown is looking like it is going in the right direction to some extent.
However, I would not go so far as to say a Rennaissaince is happening. No one single, or combination of these projects is going to revitalize the city or the community. Particularly when you balance it agains the losses to the city and community (such as losing HSBC out of the tower downtown).
Until New York has a Renaissance in Albany, Buffalo will do little more than tread water at best (as it has been doing for a long time).

When I moved back to WNY from Albany in 1998, the agreement to build a twin-span for the Peace Bridge was ready to be signed. Obviously, that never happened.
Ah the peace bridge. We had a little newspaper blurb from one of my classmates growing up in elementary school about what we should do to replace the peace bridge. I'm 30 now. It's not going anywhere.
The entire mess with the Peace Bridge started when then Sen. Moynihan, when asked why it was needed to be replaced as it was -- according to the Corps of Engineers -- perfectly fine, replied "they don't know what is UNDER the water"... and then entire hysteria began. This is over 30 years ago. Gotta love politicians for the word twists
