I'm looking at two places, wondering if anyone knows how safe the areas are (Buffalo: apartment)

The one on Belmont near Sheridan may be very close to the Colvin bus (#11 I think) and certainly within walking distance of the Delaware bus (#25), although a bit of a hike. Many if not most of the Delaware Ave buses go to Sheridan. There's a Tops Market plus other shopping at the plaza on the corner of Delaware and Sheridan. For commuting by car, this location is fairly close to the entrance/exit of the Youngmann Highway (I-290) which links up to the I-190 N/S to take you into Buffalo (downtown or West Side), Kenmore or Niagara Falls.
The one on South Forest/Main appears to be just west of the "heart" of the village of Williamsville, which probably has more to do than the Belmont location. You can take the Main Street bus downtown (#5), but it's probably a pretty long ride. I don't know how frequent NFTA buses run out to Williamsville. For commuting by car, this location is close to the easternmost entrance/exit of the Youngmann as well as the mainline of the NYS Thruway (I-90) so would be a good choice if your job was in Cheektowaga, West Seneca, South Buffalo, etc. If you were going to be flying out of the area frequently or working in the area of the airport, this is probably a good choice since Cayuga Road will take you right to the BIA.
If I were you, I'd pick the one that was the easiest commute to work unless you liked the other apartment better. I don't see safety as being a particular issue.
I do agree with Linda that safety should not really be an issue in either location. However, I would personally feel safer on North Forest near Main. Use this site to research crime in each area: SpotCrime Crime Map
I clicked the link. The Sheridan one is removed. In any case, the Williamsville one is quieter ( not on a busy road). It also is near a more frequent bus. On the flip side, it isn't so close to grocery shopping, but is just to the village (more happening)

There's a Tops Market right on Main & N. Forest, about a 3-5 min walk from there and a Walgreen's right across the street from that too.
