Another tidbit; when I was away in winters I was always worried someone would slip and fall on my town sidewalk which I was responsible for. I hired someone to plow the driveway, but to get someone to reliably do the sidewalks, especially when you weren't there to watch them, was a real chore. I don't miss the dreary, depressing grey days one bit. There is something about sunshine to lift your mood. My mental well being has improved dramatically since I left.
Unless you go skiing or enjoy getting hammered indoors every night for months on end to get through the snowy misery, you're better off moving south like the thousands of NYers who leave each year.
Lol. Put me in the 'enjoy getting hammered indoors every night' camp. It's over 50 degrees tonight so I'm about to head to Delaware Park area to have a beer or three outdoors like I do many nights in nice weather. Weather's not going to last beyond tomorrow afternoon, so I've gotta take advantage of the reprieve.
EMBRACE winter? First of all, you bake a loaf of sauerkraut rye bread, and eat it all up within 20 minutes of coming out of the oven slathered with unsalted butter. It makes every cubic inch of your home smell like heaven! You make split-pea-with-ham soup, the most delectable substance on Earth when it's seven degrees outside. You bake potatoes, almost as much for the joy of having the oven on for an hour as for eating them when they come out (they acquire extra sweetness and nuance of flavor if you leave them in for 90 minutes). There's beef stew, chicken & dumplings, lamb & barley and other such concoctions that would taste like poison if you ate them in the sweltering misery of Central Florida in mid-July. You go out for pizza and smile from ear to ear when that first bite scorches the roof of your mouth. You have a wood stove, which gives off the most satisfactory heat there is. You know the pleasures of a 'long winter's nap' under a thick down quilt. You have a double wool hat, a pair of thinsulate mittens, and some blanket-lined duck boots with fleece insoles to make you warm as toast on a hike through the wintry landscape. You have a good coat, which makes a little pod of 82-degree warmth wherever you go. You learn to appreciate the sublime beauty of moonlight reflected off a field of snow with a thin glaze of ice. You curl up with a good book, a contented cat purring in your lap, and savor a snifter of good brandy. I have a friend who moved to San Diego and moved back after a couple of years. "Take it from me," he said. "You NEED the winter."

I've lived down south (FL and NC) for 12 years now, and still miss WNY every single day. I will have random images of home pop into my mind every single day. Why am I still down south you may ask, I'm married to someone who cannot stand the snow and cold. Retirement is just a few years away, so there will likely be some "negotiations" that take place at that point. hehehe

That and that ONE day in January where it is bitterly cold but overhead is a bright, clear blue sky and EVERYONE is outside to soak up the rays...:-)
It's been in the 70's here in Phoenix and I never though I would think 70's is chilly, but it's sunny every single day Monday's forcast shows mid 80's. Hardly a day would go by that I wouldn't meet someone from Buffalo, Now I meet 5 or 6 people a day or see A NYS plate with a WestHerr, Sabers or Bills frame and see ton's & ton's of young people wearing , D' Youville, Daemen, Niagara, Buff State T-shirts and they all say the same thing, they couldn't find a job in Buffalo
Funny, we hear there good jobs here all the time here.
