Do you see this as a trend or a statistical anomaly?

If it is consistent with the murders last year in the city, it is likely again a reflection of people from cultures from outside of the country having hair-triggers about being "respected." When not respected by peers, they grew up where having out of proportion responses was the norm. WCAX did a story a month or two back on how the city now is having elders or others from those same ethnic communities reach out to shift the way conflicts are handled. It actually seems like a properly targeted response to the problem that could have lasting benefit.

I do suspect that there will still be a rise in violence and murders in the city. It is reaping the rewards of defunding and demoralizing those tasked with keeping the peace, to the point of having to hire in state troopers to cover the slack, having long time businesses in some areas close up shop, and gaining the label of "unsafe."

One year can't be a trend.

On top of that, 2 of these was domestic incident (murder/suicide), which can and does happen just about everywhere and there really isn't anything any level of law enforcement can do about that.

Do you have a source for this info? I ask because it's long been a trend for northern New Englanders to scapegoat these states for all the ills in its society (too easy). It runs much deeper than that, no?

5 murders a year (assuming it's 5 for the entire Burlington metro area) makes Burlington about 10 times more dangerous than Tokyo, which from what I can deduce has maybe 60 murders a year for 37 million people.

I've seen where the prisons in Japan are incredibly strict, where prisoners are taught self control through brutal but apparently effective methods. Vermont might want to study up so it can hold on to its good fortune.

If we're going to do a comparison, here are some other cities in the area we can compare Burlington to:

Burlington, VT, 5 murders, murder rate: 11.2/100,000
NYC, 419 murders, murder rate: 4.8/100,000
Boston, 41 murders, murder rate: 6.1/100,000

Here's a list of more rates around New England:

Once again, this could just be a statistical anomaly. But if we're going to compare cities, we should look at the rates, not just the totals.

The source is the local news reporting on these incidents.
Do you live here? Turn on channel 3 or 5 in the evening. You'll see for yourself.
No one is scapegoating anyone. Those are the facts.

I've read about them. Not sure how you came to this. Two of the five were a domestic (murder/suicide) issue, both local residents, both UVM (or former) students. One was of a teen then went to Winooski high and was raised in Chittendon County. A fourth was a Burlington resident. Only one of the five were out of state residents.

Having lived in Burlington, and having a long line of family (including currently) living in VT, a lot of times fingers are pointed at so called outsiders, which, not coincidently, seems to be code for people of color. It's sad.

There was (at least in the early 90s) a strong drug trade between Montreal and NY and Boston that passed through Burlington, but the onus of that is on the people creating the demand (and our poor public policy on drugs).

Well, you can have your 'code' conspiracy theory - I am relaying what I hear on the local news. If that information is incorrect, well, I have no control over that. I guess that's one more news outlet I can't count on for accurate info.
