I'm in the process of building a new website and unfortunately the domain name I want is taken.
However, the domain name is available with a different extension than ".COM". My concern is will this affect the sucess of the website.

.com definitely validates a website the most which is why they are so difficult to obtain. This is followed by .org, .net and .edu which all have their own connotations. Extensions such as . info and .co are usable, but so many fake sites use these extensions that it downgrades all of the sites with these extensions.

Have you tried the aftermarket sites such as Sedo, Go daddy, Flippa, etc?

Find a dot.com or your customers will end up at your competitor's website.

I think some of the new TLDs are useful for hyperlocal businesses.

If I'm the proprietor of Joe's Bar in NYC, I think I'd rather have JOES.NYC and/or JOES.BAR / JOESBAR.NYC than JOES.COM or JOESBAR.COM

I was disappointed to see no BREW / BREWS / BREWERY on the list.

I think there's a valid place to add certain additional local TLDs, there's NYC, so why not LAX, PHX, PDX etc?

You really need to have all, or at least most of them. If you have the best extension (.com) someone else in a similar business can get the .biz, .net etc. for the same name, and direct to their website. When someone searches on your name or for your product/service, they may get the other company instead of yours. This was done to me when I had a business with the .com and a competitor in a nearby city got the same name with .biz, fortunately they went out of business and gave it up a year or so later.

Yes, like you said. Every decent website name has already been taken or is currently on sale for huge amount of money. For me, it was really important that I owned both the .net and .com names to my website. Just for kicks, I also took the .org, as well. I think I left the .info and .biz

I had to create my own words. Blending two words together to create my company. Sucks because it's not a real word but I like the sound of it enough and it was the only way that I can get the .com and .net because it wasn't taken.
