Sorry about our behavior but we get a lot of posts by people who want it ALL for "not exceeding $350K". A house on .25 acre will cost you double that and maybe more unless you move to a rural area which you don't want.

Look around the central part of the state at places such as Fresno, Bakersfield or around the Sacramento area. Coastal cities are much more expensive.

Good luck with finding a job. California has over 12% unemployment.

I was a bit sarcastic, sure, but you really have to live here awhile to understand how outrageously funny your post comes across to natives. $350k for a house in an area with good schools? Heck, just $350k for a house? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Good one!

The suspense is killing us - why not reveal where that is?

The problem in CA is anyplace that isn't rural, anyplace close to jobs with a healthy population, and anyplace with good schools usually means $$$ housing. Not that you can't get something for < $350K but most likely it will be a condo or townhouse or an old fixer upper place. The other things such as weather, property, and recreation may not be what you desire. You can find place with some of those things, but probably not all. And the biggest problem is that living in an area that has jobs is not the same as actually having a job. There are tons of out of work IT professionals in CA...TONS.

The best way to go is to apply for jobs that you qualify for and when someone is interested in hiring you check out the surrounding areas and see if you can make it work.

Sacramento area. I don't want to be any more specific.
For sale on my street $299,000, 5 beds, 3&1/2 baths, 3099 sq ft., 3 car garage built in 2008. It is a short sale but it gives you an idea.
Elementary school info 2008 API 854.

I would say the Fair Oaks area of Sacramento would be one place where you can find 1/4 acre lots with decent homes, and good schools for around $350K.
