Interesting article based on the American Lung Association's latest 2011 pollution report.

Bakersfield and a number of other CA cities are included in this list:

Deadliest Air Pollution In U.S.: 10 Worst Cities (PHOTOS)

Even if the CV is improving, these cities still have a long way to go. I was kinda surprised they lumped LA/Long Beach/Riverside all together. I know Long Beach is much better than the Inland Empire when it comes to air quality.

Six out of ten in the groupings reported. Yikes! Surprised Sacramento with its almost per[petual inversion layer wasn't in there but I guess the periodic scrubbing by the delta breezes saves it.

Well with pretty much the entire Central Valley being on that list, no one should really be surprised considering 1) it's a closed basin with mountains on all sides, 2) all of the local farming and associated dust kickup and diesel exhaust and 3) all of the "just passin' through" truck traffic on I-5 and SR99.

The CV needs a good fart, all over the coastal counties. Not much has changed since last year.

Noooo, perish the thought!!!

I remembered something similar living in the South Bay of Los Angeles while growing up. The air is good most of the time at the coast as the onshore flow carries everything into the Inland Empire and as well other inland regions where it settles. But as soon as the offshore Santa Ana Winds kick in all hell breaks loose. The air suddenly becomes very nasty. The good thing was this doesn't happen too often.

Per the full Lung Association report this year, they say a few of the California cities have seen big improvements in air quality since these reports began in 2000.

"Of the 25 metropolitan areas most polluted by ozone, fifteen reported the lowest ozone scores since the State of the Air reports began (in 2000): Los Angeles, CA; Bakersfield, CA; Fresno, CA; Sacramento, CA; Houston, TX; Dallas-Fort Worth, TX; El Centro, CA; Washington-Baltimore, DC-MD-VA; New York, NY; Knoxville, TN; Phoenix, AZ; Philadelphia, PA; Atlanta, GA; Pittsburgh, PA; and Las Vegas, NV."

A little has changed, for example San Diego and Houston swapped places on the ozone list with San Diego considered the worse of the two now. Modesto saw a large change, moving from #22 for ozone in 2010 all the way up to #14 this year. Chico was #24 for zone in 2010, #22 this year. Merced was #12 for ozone in 2010, #9 this year. There are other shifts on all three lists.

The three ranking lists for 2010 are in this thread:
