The Upstate CA discussion got me thinking again about how nice it would be to split CA into different states. I know there has been sentiment to split the state north and south for a long time, but I don't think one split is enough. How many states should CA be split into and how would you split it?

I'll jump in with my thoughts after a few others have shared their ideas.

It should be one state. End of discussion. Case closed. Part of what makes CA so alluring is that it's so different from north to south and east to west.

You could also ask how many countries the U.S. should be divided into since it's exactly the same concept.

And I'd love to have that discussion too. Maybe being one giant country isn't the best idea anymore.

One, much like how many topics there should be on this well-beaten subject.

I really don't see what problems would be solved by splitting up California.... As for as the major population centers, they have far more in common then they do differences. I suppose we could give the hillbillies their own state, but not sure how that would work considering since they aren't geographically isolated in a way that would allow one state.

Now two countries? The south should have never been part of the US, its always been at odds with with the United States' founding philosophy.
