My family currently lives in San Jose, CA. We just had another kid, and need more room. We can not afford a bigger place here. We have a friend who lives in Visalia and have visited there a couple of times. It looks like a nice small town. I have heard that the air quality is really bad there. Should we move?

You are really the only one that can answer that question. You have to consider work as well on a move.

Are you just looking for a bigger place? Or does anything else matter like shopping, recreational stuff, etc.?

Yes, air is bad, you can do a search on the CA forum about air quality in the Central Valley. It can affect one's health, mine has been, other people have not been, how is your friend doing?

Unless you absolutely have to, i wouldn't expose children to really bad air quality.
Is a bigger home worth compromising their health?

First question for any move needs to be the job side. I'd be looking at potential job opportunities before making a decision.

Visalia is a nice town, although I wouldn't call it small since it has 110,000 residents.

Air quality in Visalia is not great but is better than inland Southern California, yet many families have moved to the Inland Empire east of Los Angeles to live. There is no one answer for everyone, you have to determine your own feeling about that.

Default relocating

there are areas closer to Sacramento with affordable homes where the Delta breeze keeps the air cleaner. Anywhere North of Modesto should be fine.

Visalia's air quality index today is 97. That's pretty high and its not even summer yet.

Do it. get a place on the edge of town, a little land, some horses. Visalia is a quick drive to hiking and camping in Sequoia National Park.
