A study published by the University of Pennsylvania and George Mason University found that a ban on plastic bags by the city of San Francisco has led to an increase in E. coli infections. In the three months since the ban, deaths from foodborne illness in that city spiked by 46%....relative to other counties, deaths in San Francisco increased by 50 to 100%, and emergency room visits by a comparable amount. The same bans on plastic bags in other California cities showed similar effects.

E. coli Infections Spike After Plastic Bag Ban in California | Food Poisoning Bulletin

We find that the bag ban is associated with a 34 percent increase in ER visits where E. coli is included in the principal diagnosis. This suggests an additional 40 ER visits. If trends are included, these estimates increase to a 61 percent rise or 70 additional ER visits.

He, he, he....

So destroy the "environment" with plastic (bags) or more potable water and detergent down the drain (to wash out your nasty E. coli.). ...oh, and likely more electricity (maybe from a coal/gas burning power plant) to dry your freshly washed linen grocery bag...

...environmentally speaking, maybe it's best just to get the O517 E. coli and suffer... Oh wait, that'll consume a lot more potable water keeping you hydrated, if you survive...

...damn, just cant win...

...wonder if there is a theme here?

I still don't see why they haven't just switched to free recycled paper bags, if objecting to plastic bags.

Ok let's try this; does another bay area native want to dispute this claim? Considering it's posted by someone who doesn't live here. I personally haven't heard this.

MOD CUT

Maybe if the environuts weren't so fanatical, they'd be open to the idea of disposable bags for things like meat or produce.

Double wrap meat with what? More plastic?

Wash your bags with what? Water and detergent? Seems wasteful.

What problem solved?
