Okay, I've read a bunch of the old Redding threads. It seems like most of the threads say that if you don't have to worry about income, it can be an okay place to live. So, with that in mind, do you think it would be a decent place for me to retire? I'm on SSI and right now I get a free apartment for managing a building in Santa Clara. I'd love not to have to work anymore, and want to stay in California. The only place I see I can afford is Redding.

I'd appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

If you can take the heat in the summer (100+), a rainier winter, the distance from other major cities, and enjoy the outdoors (hiking, boating, etc.), then sure.

What would you like to do in your retired life here?....

We have an OK community college with some decent technical programs that are fun.. and some interesting enrichment stuff

There's a casino here.. not my taste but its close

The lakes are awesome off season... crowded to nuts during peak season.. watching alcohol fueled boat ramp behavior after a long day on the lake in 100 degree weather can be sometimes entertaining

The mountains are generally awesome.. but we are within the emerald triangle which means one should be careful where they wander now

Night life... hmmm,, depends what you like,, me I like the stars.. seems like a lot of people like the bars.. we have the second or third highest drunk driving arrest stats per capita in California

Redding is very quickly becoming just another homogenized California city
On the down side the prison gangs are vying for turf here from inside.. so we are seeing some real poohbutts showing up.. what used to be gangsta wannabes are changing to hardened criminals vying for control

Shasta County has a huge population of social welfare benefit recipients.. lots of people on disability.. if you are in that category you wont stand out

I'm really a homebody. I would like to get a small dog, which I can't have where I live now. I'd like to be able to take a dog on walks, maybe go to an outdoor cafe. I go to the library and read a lot. Don't care about bars or nightlife. Might want to check out a senior center, go on some day trips. My life is mellow and calm for the most part. I just really want to not work for my boss anymore and have a dog for companionship.

Right now I see my daughter about once a month for lunch in Berkeley, so I would miss that. But, when I weigh seeing her for lunch once a month and being able to quit and have a dog to go for walks with every day, I guess I'd rather be able to quit and have a dog. I hope that doesn't make me a terrible mother!

If you are a single woman living alone planning on Redding you need to read this...
The Most Dangerous U.S. Cities For Women - Forbes

IF you can stand the heat here and get a place with central air ( It's going to be 115 on Saturday here and will only get worse once we get closer into summer ) you should be okay. Hopefully you have a vehicle with A/C otherwise you will need to get one asap as driving 4 months a year here without it will be hell.

Be aware the library here is a hang out for the AB109 felons who are homeless staying at the Rescue mission a few blocks away and the restaurants/cafes downtown are also a haven for panhandlers. Some are well known to the locals and can be very aggressive, so I would suggest you get yourself some pepper spray.

Just be aware of your surroundings here and you should be okay.

It doesn't make you a bad mother, at all. Do what you need to do. I hope you'll be able to adapt to the summer heat. After living in Santa Clara, it may be a big shock to you. Redding isn't bad, though. You could do a whole lot worse.

If SSI is your ONLY income you will find it a bit tight financially. Work out that part in advance.

You guys are so great! I saw on Craigslist an ad for Hotel Redding Senior Housing and I called them this morning. It's federally subsidized and newly renovated for seniors 55+. They're mailing me an application. They have studios, one and two bedroom apts, and they allow dogs!!!!!

The studio is only $333, and my SSI is $866. Soc Sec now takes 1/3 of my SSI for my "free" apartment for managing the building. So, my finances will be almost the same, but I get a DOG! LOL! And no more tenants or boss. God. Cross your fingers for me.

I'm really a homebody, and I don't go out at night as it is. I used to take mace with me when I lived in Davis and walked my dog on the greenbelt (hot weather there, too). I'm sure Davis isn't as scary, but I have no problem using mace. I used to just mace aggressive dogs, though, lol!

I guess I'll just have to deal with the panhandlers when I walk the dog. Or maybe I can put the dog in the car and drive somewhere safer to walk it?

Anyway, I should be the ideal tenant candidate. It's funny, they prescreened me on the phone and asked if I'd had any felonies, ha ha! I thought about you guys and your warnings! I've been the onsite manager here for 7 years, was a tenant before that and the owner asked me to be the manager, so I have great references. My credit is decent with 649 score, I'm not scary or anything, so hopefully, they'll be happy to take me.

Please, keep giving me tips. I really look forward to your responses!
