I'm 41, single, never married, no kids, not sure if I want kids but would be open to the possibility for the first time in my life if the situation was right (guess I'm getting old). I tend to enjoy being in a relationship (until it doesn't work out) and have been single for about 8 months, but have been dating on and off.

I moved to Orange County in January and the job I have taken is a disaster. I am liking the area more and more. I am debating a position in Santa Barbara vs taking another job in Orange County. I have traveled extensively and have worked in many areas in North America and am really looking for somewhere to plop myself down and settle in these days.

I haven't lived in a smallish town since I finished school 13 years ago and it is obviously a different experience meeting women when you are constantly around women your age in school. I tend to meet my dates online these days (as, I think, most people do) since I have been in new areas for the past year or so and don't know many people in the area.

I'm a decent looking guy, fit, with a decent job (maybe not by wealthy SB standards, but 120k) and women tend to like me. I'm not into dating multiple people, clubs, bars, etc. Just wondering if living somewhere so small would limit my possibility of meeting someone special to develop a relationship.

Also, I live a pretty simple lifestyle -- not into fancy cars, designer this or that, etc. My goals are pretty basic: to have a job I enjoy as least most of the time and to buy a small house with a yard, get a dog again and meet someone interesting to spend time with. Meeting a few good friends would be nice as well. I'm kind of done with traveling for now and want to live somewhere that I enjoy enough that I won't have that constant desire to fly or drive away to far-off places. I've gotten away from some things that I enjoy in the past 2 years due to lots of turmoil in my personal and professional life (hiking, outdoors, etc.) and feel that SB would be a great place to get back in touch with all of that. Long-term I am willing to live 40mins from SB, if need be, to afford a reasonable place (but I think I can afford a small house/townhouse in SB from what I've seen online).

Rambling is done -- what are women like in the area? Is living somewhere so small a great impediment to meeting someone? Are there many single women in the area ages 30-40? I have heard from some people that it is "all" retirees and college students with a few families thrown in the mix.

I can't believe no one has responded to this. I think you'll do just fine here in SB. With your salary you'll probably be able to buy a condo but you'll definitely have no problem renting. The outdoor activites you mentioned are here year round. This area is perfect for active lifestlyes. I definitely don't think SB is all retirees and college students....certainly not. I've lived here for 7 years and have never gotten that impression. There is a very diverse population here. Plenty of "middle aged" singles and lots of fun choices for date activites. Check out this article I just found about the dating scene in SB.....

Looks & Money, Baby! The Santa Barbara Independent

The women here are a mix of down to earth, fun loving, nature loving types to barbie-doll, trophy wife wannabe types. Whatever you're attracted to, I think you'll be able to find it. As far as SB being small....sure we don't have a Target or Wal-mart but it truely doesn't feel small. With the incredibly busy 101 freeway blasting right through, L.A. being so close and all the tourists, it feels quiet large actually. Santa Barbara attracts people and I know quite a few 30-40 singles who live here for the active and sunny lifestyle it offers. I think you'll have a lot of fun!
(p.s. If you do decide to give SB a try, check out my post from the "Should we move to Santa Barbara" thread. I mentioned a few resturaunts I think you'll be interested in (for possible dates?) and Hendry's Dog Beach when you get your dog. Good Luck!!

Santa Barbara is a great place to live, people are friendly. There are all kinds of people, from pretentious to outdoorsy/down-to-earth, and there's always the beach scene! I think you'll be happy there.

I really love my life here...

The good: weather, friends, community, night life, beach life, PARTY!
The bad: tourist, gangs (mostly Latino) price, homeless homeless and more homeless
