I was up in SB a few weeks ago and ended up at the La Cumbre Mall one day. The place probably had seen better days. But surprisingly, I stumbled upon a Tiffany’s store which seems completely out of place.

Then I realized that I have never seen any luxury brands (Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior, etc) in SB, even along State Street. I know there is a Saks and they do have those brands, but, I’m talking about free standing stores.

So what gives? SB seems like a perfect place for these types of stores to open as you have wealthy residents and tons of tourists. And how on earth did Tiffany end up at La Cumbre, instead of State St.

As long as there are Dickey's and Red Wings boutiques, I'm good

Maybe 'Made in the USA' is in vogue. Wait, there isn't even a Walmart in town. Never mind….

SB might present more with Ocean Pacific, but a surplus place with Dickey's/Carhartt/Levi's would be nice.

SB is a poor cousin to Beverly Hills, where most of those stores are. Anyway, those brand names have become diluted, and anyone can see fake Vuitton and Gucci bags carried by people shopping at Wal-Mart.

The super rich of Montecito and Beverly Hills can afford couture.

La Cumbre Mall is a crapshoot. They're constantly rotating retailers, trying to bring business from State Street, when the reality is, it would be much better used as shopping service for the surrounding suburban areas (not to mention the extremely high income Hope Ranch right next door). They're catering to a market that's impenetrable when they have a market right under their nose.

The reason SB doesn't have any of those high end brand names is the same reason why SB doesn't have a Walmart or a Target. As an ex local, its a good thing. They're trying to keep the shopping experience more diverse and alternative. If you can get a Gucci bag or go to a Walmart there, then the town suddenly becomes uninteresting and just the same as the rest of SoCal. And trust me, the locals do NOT want that.

Another reason is because retail rent on State Street are insanely high. Not that Gucci couldn't afford it, but they probably wouldn't see a very good return on investment.

nightlysparrow and eureka1 got it right. Plus, you can buy it all online anyways.
