I need a new change of scenery. Can anyone recommend a city or state that has a similar to Silicon Valley or Bay Area?

It might help if you said a few things about those areas that you liked, and amenities you were looking for in your new location.

NYC is also grossly overpriced, crowded and filled with self absorbed, pretentious people who couldn't imagine living outside of their own little bubble... have you considered it yet?

If you actually have a place you can afford, don't lose it, because you may not be able to come back:

So many hysterical people on this forum. Problem is, they all lack the element of surprise.

I haven't been there, but I have heard that in terms of weather and progressive attitudes, North Carolina is somewhat comparable. Particularly areas in and around Asheville.

For tech industry, southwest Portland, namely Beaverton and Hillsboro have a growing tech industry. Weather isn't significantly different from the Bay Area, meaning you won't get the oppressive humidity or sub-zero temperatures you do off the west coast. People always talk about Texas being the new IT hub, but I don't know anyone who has gone there for work so I can't speak to it.

You might want to consider going down the coast for a change of scenery. We have a tech hub of sorts in Orange County with most of the industry jobs located in Irvine.

There is also tiny Aliso Viejo (right next to Laguna Beach).

AV has its own mini tech and biomedical center; and has been labeled Southern California 's most entrepreneurial city by some at MIT's Sloan School of Management; but it pales when compared to Northern CA.

Even though AV is very small (7.47 sq mi and 50K people), it still attracts a lot of venture capital, established tech & biomed companies, and startups:

Some of the tech and biomed/pharmaceutical research companies of various sizes located in Aliso Viejo, with either a headquarters or branch include: Microsemi Corp, QLogic, MicroVention (moving its headquarters to AV), Dell (former Quest headquarters), Microsoft (formerly DATAllegro), 3Tera, Gaikai, Smith Micro Software, Telogis, Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, CNS Response, Arkami, Networks in Motion, Sequent Medical, UST Global, Corent Technology, Clarient (oncology diagnostics), Avanir Pharmaceuticals, Enmotus (storage virtualization),Inceptus Medical (incubator offering data analysis, prototype development, etc.), OCTANe( connects people, capital and resources in technology), Inari Medical ( medical devices), ClarVista Medical (ophthalmic innovations), Media Systems Technology, Shift Digital, Insight Global, Alternative Technology Solutions, Ambry Genetics..........and more.

Whew, I have too much time on my hands this afternoon.->

On the East Coast, look at Blacksburg VA., very similar to the Asheville area but right now real estate prices are lower. A new
rail link to DC starts in 2016.
