Finally, a statewide tax goes down in California.

Sales and Use Tax DECREASES by .25% on Jan. 1, 2017.

I subscribe to publications distributed by the Board of Equalization in California and just got information that not only does the tax decrease (yes, it's minuscule), but there's a cool website where you can put in your address and get your entire tax rate (or that of a store, for example) as of the current date and then if you subtract .25%, you'll get your new rate.

Here it is:

https://maps.gis.ca.gov/boe/TaxRates/

One thing bugs me about it, though, and that is that if you fill in the zip code, you still have to add the state, and if you fill in the street address and state (which will be California......duh), you still have to add the zip code.

As a computer programmer, stupid mistakes like that drive me nuts. In no way would it ever be necessary to add the state if you have already entered the zip code.

I suppose they want the full address to show off their results on the map, otherwise that should be unnecessary, too.

Anyway, have fun.

It will go up again, for something purported to be for the kids, safety, fire fighters, etc.

I don't think the state tax will go up for those reasons, but more likely the local taxes.

Isn't this the rollback to the temporary sales tax increase Gov Brown called for in 2008 or '09 or whenever all due to the recession?

I thought that was what Prop. B was on the ballot--to keep the sales tax.

There were so many propositions that wanted to raise taxes in different ways that they all blended together.

Edit: Measure B was to raise the sales tax .50% just in Sacramento County.

There was no Proposition B on my ballot. My county had a Measure U but nothing else containing letters. All numbers and yes, most addressing tax increase, bonds, or assessments.

Default California sales tax going down in 2017!

Statewide sales tax rates will fall a quarter-point effective Jan. 1 with the expiration of a temporary tax increase approved by voters four years ago
