I've been to LA twice, and I'm visiting San Francisco right now. I personally prefer San Francisco. I find the weather to be much more comfortable than LA. The air itself also seems cleaner and fresher. San Francisco though isn't as high energy as LA, and the people seem more real. Those are just some of my opinions.

I find SF a bit better than LA, but not much.

I would not want to live in either. Now SD County is not bad in many places, but I do not want to live in a big city.

SF has the state's best weather and best food but SD is nicer overall nowadays. What LA has going for it - and this may be a shock to those who haven't been there for some time - is its much improved transit system, which nowadays is better than BART. And the Dodgers.

I'm a Bay area native and a transplant to San Diego. I've spent quite a lot of time in Los Angeles over the decades and really enjoy some of its amenities such as museums, architecture, restaurants, and culture. But I could not live there. The traffic is even worse than San Francisco, I find the area to be not very scenic and kind of ugly in many parts, and people tend to be more eccentric. I really love San Francisco but don't think it's worth the money for the lifestyle. At the moment, I find San Diego is in that sweet spot, kind of like Goldilocks and the Three Bears. It's "just right.". Not as much traffic as Los Angeles, not as much smog, not as much heat, but still Urban, with access to mountains, deserts, Wineries, and Mexico.

Not to mention San Diego is safer than both LA and SF in terms of violent crime.

To live and visit SF is the better city. LA is unique and has lots to offer, but it's very spread out, so it's hard to take advantage of it unless you don't mind dealing with constant traffic.

I liked San Francisco better in the 70s and 80s. Its changed a lot since the late 90s. Used to be such a weird, eclectic place with a wide swath of humanity of every stripe, preference and income. Now its seems to be turning into a place for techies and Chinese nationals looking for a place to park their money. Everyone else is being slowly pushed out.

LA and that's starting to appeal to me a bit more.
