Wow! I came across the site Apartmentratings.com, and was looking at the Apartment ratings for Fresno...so disheartening!!! Cold Landlords, non-helping maintenance staff, no real security (even when claiming they have one), I think almost every apartment review reported car theft/home invasion/vandalism etc., and they don't care if you move out because they get your money for breaking the lease early. Anyone have same feeling for apartments in their own area.

I'm so glad this site is up, because we'll be moving in that area soon. Really opened my eyes!

Hi, K.P. -

Take those ratings with a grain of salt. Most people who would take the trouble to seek out an apartment ratings website want to complain about something. Sorry, but that's my cynical take on human nature!

If Fresno landlords are anything like L.A. landlords, though, those reviews have a ring of truth. The owner of my building will rent to anyone who has money, and it's the only reason anyone ever gets evicted! They're sweet and helpful until you sign that lease, and then *poof*. You're lucky to ever see them again. Unfortunately, the quality of the building doesn't seem to matter. I hope it's a little better in Fresno than it is here.

I live in an Equity Residental owned apartment in central CA that got SLAMMED on apartmentratings.com. When I googled the name of the complex, I found out they are involved in a class action lawsuit for screwing people when they move out so the negative reviews were well warranted.

PS - look @ the stats on the per capita crime in Fresno. It's AWFUL. I lived in Fresno 90-92 when I went to Fresno State and it was a dump back then.... but rent for a college student was CHEAP.

negative ratings usually mean more than positive ones (yes, the management do actually write many of the positive ones, as I've found out in one case.)

It's better to avoid professionally managed places on those apartment sites ... they're geared toward maximum corporate profits. Unless you can afford the really highly rated luxury places .... I went for a highly rated place in Seattle, long distance rental unseen, and it definitely was not worth the price. The neighbor apparently made crank or something involving fumes that gave me a headache, and the place filled with mold during the incessant rains triggering off severe asthma.

So now I read ordinary ads for non-professionally managed places and make sure I see the place first.
