(I searched the CDFs for thread titles for ‘Hungry Valley’; so far, none at all)

If doing a little exploring on dirt roads interests you, give this a try the next time you drive between NorCal and SoCal on I-5. Here is a map of the route >> https://is.gd/EikyDD. The shortened URL is safe. I created it.

This bypasses 10 miles of I-5 and goes through the Hungry Valley SVRA. I’ve found California’s SVRAs to be safe places to hone your offroad driving skills. I’ve been using the SVRAs for over seven years. Trails are marked like ski runs, Easy, Medium, and Difficult, and you get a map when you enter so you can see where the different trails are. This route through, the one I mapped, are all on Easy dirt roads and you do not need high clearance vehicle for them.

But if you want to do some extra exploring (and get some extra dirt trail practice), Hungry Valley has many trails. There is a $5 entrance fee, which is very nominal for controlled conditions and maintained trails where you can practice on ‘known, controlled conditions’ (my words), and with officials who patrol regularly in case you might need assistance

I now drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Prior to that I drove a 2001 Honda CR-V. My wife’s car is a 2001 VW Jetta. All of those cars can easily handle the dirt roads on this “bypass” of I-5, between Exit 205 Frazier Mountain Park Rd at the north, and Exit 195 Smokey Bear Rd at the south. Yes including the Jetta. But only in dry conditions. If it’s wet, that can be a very different story.

Enjoy your exploring!

I'm thinking the OP transposed two letters. I always heard it referred to as OHA, (whatever that means, Off-road Highway Area?), but it looks like SVRA is it's "real" name. Stands for, "State Vehicular Recreation Area".

[mod note] I'll change the title. [/mod note]
