Just bought a Garmin nuvi 260w and in the owner's manual, it says that in California mounting a GPS unit to the windshield is not allowed...

so how do others use their GPS units?

Although people do mount them on the windshield, in California it is against the law and could lead to a citation.

The appropriate vehicle code section is V.C. 26708: 26708. (a) (1) No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows.
(2) No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied in or upon the vehicle which obstructs or reduces the driver's clear view through the windshield or side windows.

There is an exception for bridge and toll road transponders but nothing else is acceptable.

you can comply with the law by mounting it to your dashboard

We just leave ours inbetween the front seats while we are using it. It is loud enough to hear and that's all we need. If I am curious about a certain street coming up and would like to know in advance then I just glance down at it. I personally don't like it in the window, it's annoying and why give some person just one more reason to break in your car? After using it we put it in the compartment under the middle of the seats.

Wow, I did not know that and it does not surprise me CA already has some BS law against it. I have a Garmin and it's mounted on my windshield.

I'm really getting sick of these BS laws in CA and am starting to ignore most of them.

I believe that some other states also have the same restriction on attaching things to windshields like GPS devices.

According to my Tom Tom documentation, only Minnesota, another far left state. I'm surprised Mass and NY don't have similar laws.

I prefer in-dash GPS anyway, preferrable OEM. They have much better integration. I have the Tom Tom for when I go to Denver and rent a car.

typically you can find aftermarket brackets, cigarette lighter mounts, or sticky things. delphi xm radios come with adhesive mounts for dashboards and are about the same size as some gps devices.

the law is there to protect you and others and i agree with the law in principle. ive never understood why newer vehicles have so many blindspots. my old chevelle had better sight lines than my saturn, my wifes pontiac vibe, or any suv i've driven in the past 5 years and the chevelle only had a driver side mirror and a rearview mirror, no passenger mirror. we dont need to introduce a blindspot infront to go with all the other blindspots in the vehicle
