I recently moved to TX permanently (in early August) and have registered my vehicle here. Now someone told me that I needed to let the CA DMV know as well otherwise I will owe registration fees on a continued basis. Is this accurate? I've been looking for a link on the CA website but I can't seem to find anything of that sort.

Anyone know what the requirement is?

Note - I already filled the change of address on the DMV website so asking if there is anything else besides that.

Just make sure you included your car in the change of address. Apparently CA feels it's totally normal that you would move, but your car would stay at the old address. Default should be that car obviously moves too, and if you want it to stay, THAT'S the exception you need to look out for.

Anyway, I was in an annoying situation because once I paid my car off, I never got the title. I inquired to the bank about a year later and they say they just tell the relevant DMV to "release the lien". So, I asked my new state about it. They said they had an "Arizona Registration Only", and that the title was still in CA. So I had to mail a whole bunch of forms and papers and copies of things to the CA DMV to get my title sent out here.

Don't get caught up in the same mess.

But yeah, my mom had also moved out of state too, but she didn't bother with changing the car's address. So she kept getting notices from the DMV about failing to register, and that her car would be flagged as....something. Non operational, I think? I honestly don't remember. Nothing came of it beyond that.

My son moved out of state and then found out about having to notify DMV. This is the form he used to notify CA DMV. https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/uploads/2020/06/dmv14.pdf . He mailed the form, entered the VIN number and former CA plate, and highlighted a notation that the vehicle no longer had the California plates and was registered in his new state.

He never heard back from CA DMV.

cool thanks. I did file the online change of address forms and included my vehicle, however the online version did not have the checkbox that flags the vehicle as being registered out of state already. Perhaps I will file a hardcopy version as well just to be safe.

Thanks!

So your car has a "pink slip" from having it registered and titled in CA. Move to another state and you need to have a title for the car to show new state, so they can issue new title and registration. CA is probably notified by new state that they now have the title in that state. Right?

Not in NV. You can obtain registration in NV but still retain out of state title.

Maybe it’s changed since then, but when we moved out of CA to Texas in 2005 there was no such fuss. CA bothered my Pa for some other taxes, but once we got the proper procedure down for actually registering the cars here, there was absolutely no harassment from the DMV in CA, and no forms to have sent in. We kept the CA titles too.
