Let's start a current thread. I'd like to hear from people currently living in Eureka. What you like and what you don't like. Or people who lived there and moved within the last two years - Why? Thanks in advance for your inputs.

I don’t live there, but I’ve visited the place last summer. Very charming little town, you can smell the ocean. And of course, there’s the Lost Coast Brewery

OP - where do YOU live now?

This should be an interesting thread; expecting the 'usuals' to show up.

OP, why are you considering Eureka, over other Humboldt locations? Based on what residents have said here, I wouldn't choose Eureka; I'm exploring other Humboldt locations (online, so far). Eureka sounds more economically depressed than other locations, with more homelessness, etc.

I'll throw a question out there to the Eureka residents, too: I've heard conflicting stories about the economy up there, after legalization of marijuana. Some say it's crashed, others say it's improving. I'd love to get current residents' perspective.

I like it because there's virtually no traffic. There are problems with healthcare. Can't answer queries about the cannabis economy because it's still shaking out. To the average person here, no affect exc maybe more people smoking on the street. Don't come without a job or more than miminum income.

There were a good number of brutal Youtube videos about the homeless, drug and crime issues that ensued Humboldt county especially Garberville and Eureka in particular. You may want to check that out more thoroughly before you put down your roots there.

I did a quick check and the crime average is about twice as high as the US average.

The Redheaded Blackbelt news blog is a good source of local information about Eureka, Humboldt County and the whole Emerald Triangle.

It's quite informative and entertaining.

You misread that post. He said, "There are problems with healthcare". It's a good question. I've read the reviews about the local hospitals in Humboldt. They don't inspire confidence. Quality of care seems to depend in part on which doctor is on shift when you have your emergency. Am looking forward to responses to your inquiry re: further details on healthcare.
