Seems like a lot of those in other States are jealous or envious. California is in the forefront of energy, climate, and other conservative efforts. You guys can make all the excuses you want... but California didn't get here by making excuses, but by implementing policies and fostering a culture of conservatism.

Anyhow, if you want the Stats, the US Department of Energy ranks California (2006) as:

#1 in energy produced from Biomass
#1 in energy produced from Geo Thermal
#1 in energy produced from Solar
#2 in energy produced from Wind

and #1 in total energy produced from renewables

2005 Energy Production Composition:
California:
Coal: 1%
Natural Gas: 36%
Petroleum: 3%
Nuclear: 19%
Hydroelectric: 20%
Renewables: 20%

United States:
Coal: 50%
Natural Gas: 15%
Petroleum: 6%
Nuclear: 20%
Hydroelectric: 6%
Renewables: 2%

Fairly moronic survey...

Concept of either "average" Californian or "average" American is rather amorphous and meaningless....

Any energy use analysis needs to be far more complex and involves many "squishy" judgments...

For ex., how does one account for one's choice of no. of kids/pets, which all consume energy and increase one's carbon footprint? Obesity rates? Obese people often have higher rates of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease....healthcare uses energy, right? How does one account for all the tourists who come to CA and burn fuel and cause increased demand for energy-burning hotels, etc?....

What the hell are you talking about? It's a study not a survey btw.
It's an average of all households. It's not like people in other states have more kids or pets than the Californians and that somehow increases their energy usage over us. That makes absolutely no sense. Obesity rates; what? Your example of tourism would increase our energy consumption, be are still low despite of that.

You are not making any sense at all, like usual.

California has no more a conservationist attitude than any other state and I'd say that in many ways California is one of the WORST offenders in the realm of cosumerism. Californians have more cars per person than in any other state. The California "lifestyle" shamelessly promotes hip and trendy marketing of every stupid new tech gimmick and fashion trend with a TOTAL disregard for the long or even short-term environmental impacts.....Shopping malls are a way of LIFE out here, not just a place to get out of the cold....and speaking of cold...California has a Mediterranean climate....so it will LOOK like we use less energy..you can't compare Khaliphorniya to Minnesota.
And on the issue of sustainable development, why the totally crazy housing boom in "cali"....why the continuing FLOOD of people coming into the state that is already NOT able to accomodate the people already here? Why continue the housing boom, that what with all the stupid loans being dolled out...obviously can not be maintained? All this means more strip malls, highways and DEVELOPMENT, and MORE LOSS of open space, woods, forests and IRREPLACEABLE farmland....and for WHAT? Just another cheesy stucco mall...the same stupid shops pushing tons of cheap crap flushed into the state from CHINA....
The state has done little to stop the never ending march of urban sprawl...just look at all the wonderful land outside of Sacramento now buried under thousands of so called "estates"....how is that "green"?
Every time I go out I see tens of thousands of roofs in "cali" but few if any type of solar collectors...even NOW...decades later after "solar" came out....WT....?
No windmills on the coast? Why?
No turbines off shore? Why?
No new Geothermal plants....WHY!?

...Kali-porn-ya has toooooo many other 'pressing' issues to attend to.

Lol I like that 'Kali-porn-ya' thing, and an going to add it to my vocab list!

We sell a lot of solar lighting, motion lighting, 'dusk-to-dawn' lighting, and more so, energy efficient lights. Even those little flourescent bulbs come in bulb shapes now so they arent just in the squiggly shapes now, which makes it nicer looking in some fixtures, such as chandeliers and ceiling fans. Sure they cost a bit more, but they seem to last forever.
But I, personally, have always been conservative with electric, gas and water anyway, out of my own wierdness.

Where in California have you been?? You have the LA/San Fran mentality, not every city in the state is like that.... my county has plenty of sustainable farmland, no regional mall and plenty of houses and businesses have solar panels, including mine. At my house we also collect rainwater, have a garden for fresh organic vegetables and raise our own livestock for food. You're lumping all of California into this LA group, of which my community is not. In fact, my town currently has a shield act in the process of being voted for which would limit the size of buildings so that wal marts, targets etc. would not be able to be built inside our city limits.

I know a bit of California is like you described, but PLEASE don't lump the whole state into one stereotype.

In California, especially Southern parts of the state does not need any A/C or Heat on.
Another uninformed assumption from someone who apparently gets their California facts from movies and TV.

Here are two pertinent Southern California words for you to study: Inland valleys.

Here are two more: Desert cities

There's more to Southern California than the temperate coastal strip, Jersey boy.
