Would anyone like to share their experiences with their children attending a Spanish immersion dual language school? The place I am moving to has a school with a lottery to get into the program and I am considering it. I'd love feedback from parents whose children are in this or have been in this in the past. Thanks in advance!

One of our sons was in the program for a while. We liked the idea and it seemed to be a great program. Then the district decided to move it to another school within the district that was in our opinion to far away and at one of the worse places in the district boundaries. They let every one know that it was because the school that they moved the program to had a higher percentage of Spanish speaking kids and they could not afford to bus them in to our school. They said it was easier for our kids to get to the other school because most of us were better off financially. Many of those parents were upset that their kids were being sent back to the lowest performing school in the district from the highest performing school. Our son is now in Second grade and is in the standard English only program. Another son will start Kindergarden this year and we have decided to try and get him into the program at another district. We have several choices in our area, including a charter school affiliated with California State University Channel Islands Campus. Nearly all of the programs that we know of have a lottery to get into the program. When you figure that a Kindergarden will only have 20 kids and many of the programs are set up to have 10 English and 10 Spanish speaking kids, half boys and half girls for each language it is not hard to see that the chances are limited if your school only designated one or two classes of kindergarten for the program.

Another school in the Ventura area has been doing the program for over a decade. They have had a lot of success and the kids are doing great. It is kind of fun to watch a class of Kindergarteners and 1st graders give a presentation in Spanish.
