Hi, We are an irish couple planning to move to California. Can any recommend best place to live. We have a year old baby and work in finance. So we need to be in commuting distance. Ideally we would like to be based in a suburb or small town and not in a city centre. We love the ocean and the countryside and are looking for somewhere safe with a community feel to it.

I think you need to provide more details in your query. California is a HUGE state. Firstly, do you already have jobs/green cards to move over?

Look into the San Luis Obispo area.

Try and get the jobs first and work backwards from there. Remember, in California you can drive on a single road from the Mexican border to the Oregon border which is like driving from the north of England to the south of France. It's huge.

I bet you would like the Northern California area. It has more water and vegetation which would be less of a cultural shock then the Southern parts of Ca. Check out towns north of San Francisco. Heck, some of them were founded by the Irish and have names such as Dublin and Inverness!

Commuting distance to what job location? I see that you work in finance. Do you have a job lined up?

I second the vote for Northern California. I think it will feel more like home to you. The air quality alone in Southern California would be a shock to you.
