I'm attracted to the progressive attitute this city seems to have. What kind of job market does it have? How about housing prices?

I heard something about a swamp? Can anybody tell me more about Arcata?

I live in McKinleyville about 5 miles north of Arcata. The price of homes has fallen here, but it is still more expensive in Arcata because it is a college town. The job market is not good here in Humboldt county right now. The state is at 10.1 % jobless rate, so I am sure that we are higher than that. Swamp is a misnomer, Arcata has a marsh system that is tied to the waste treatment facility, but it is not a swamp. We also have lagoons up here, but again, not swamps.

I lived there for 9 months back in 96-97, it took me months to find a job and I was always soggy. It is a great place to hang out at for a bit but there is a lot of rain and cloudiness but that makes for a great environment. Everyone is really into being outdoors and healthy. I hated Eureka and McKinleyville but loved Trinidad and Arcata. Overall, I would look into an area that was inland so I could see the sunshine once in a while.

What do you mean by progressive? I don't think I would call it progressive but very liberal yes....

As for the job market, Humbolt county has been depressed since I can remember, it is worse now..

Neat place. Our Dear Lord has permanently set the thermostat for Arcata to 63 dF. So if you don't like a place where it's endlessly 63 dF outside, I'd stay the heck away!!

Arcata exists upon two things: Humbolt State University and the harvesting of Redwoods.

If you're OK with that, you'll be fine.

You're right. I forgot the importance of "agriculture."
