Wow that's pretty wild, I knew two guys who did this, both were disabled, one had a very small trailer and the other had an old motorhome, they lived in state campgrounds in isolated areas, I got to know them from hunting trips. these guys lived pretty rough, one guy just lived on campers handouts and fish from the creeks, the other seemed to always have food, I'm sure they both got state disability but I think the one guy gave most of his to his daughter. they both seemed happy enough. i haven't seen them in years, I'm sure they have both passed away by now.
I got married pretty young, I think that stopped me from doing the same thing, i always had the urge to live like that, i grew up living like gypsy's my Dad work geophysical all his life traveling town to town, sometimes we would only be in a town 2 days and we pulled a small trailer with us, i guess it was in my blood.
Maybe that's why i love camping so much.
I also feel if a person is doing what makes them happy then they are doing the right thing.
