I lived there for ten years, and i was in stitches the whole time. Part of the reason for their if lack of economic development was their refusal to take themselves seriously. A quality that they brought through their Irish lineage, pretty much unalloyed.

At one point it seemed like all of the CBC's comedy division was dominated by Newfoundlanders: Air Farce, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, CODCO, etc.

Overall, Newfoundlanders are very present on the CBC in general relative to population. And not just in comedy.

They also tend to watch and listen to the CBC quite a bit more than other English-speaking Canadians do.

Newfoundlanders have a fantastic sense of humor but are also some of the kindest people in the world.

As far as them being the butt of jokes ... I would like to see those "jokesters" live on the rock and survive the winters.
