my daughter was born end of Jan 1998, if she had arrived two weeks earlier we would have been in trouble, the roads and the city were shut down, mind you people in the country had it worse
I remember it well. I was a student in Ottawa at the time. The university had backup generators, so when I woke up that day to go to class I didn't think anything was amiss. It was only later on that I realized the full scope of what happened.
I had found memories of those times. Happened first day of school after spring beak in elementary, so we got two extra weeks. The best part was that every park field was transformed into a vast skating rink with smooth ice -I don't think I'll experience anything like that again. We pretty much played hockey every day before things got soft.
We were lucky that we only lost electricity for less than a day.
We lived on the upper floor of a triplex at the time, and our elderly landlady went to live temporarily with a relative who had power.
The SO and I actually enjoyed it. We'd go to pick supplies like cigarettes and snacks for some of the older residents at a shelter at our local town hall in Lasalle, slipping and sliding all the way.
We met some interesting people at the shelter, and got to know some of our neighbours.
